Furry's DIR-826L Review
« on: February 16, 2013, 10:25:33 AM »

Update: 03/29/2013

TrueGigabit Networking is new for some of the DIR-(L) Series routers. Not all L series routers have this feature. This comes enabled by default and also grays out DNS Relay seen on the Setup/Networking screen. To use DNS Relay or disable it, you have to disable True Gigabit option first. Page 28 of the User Manual states: "This will increase the through-put of the WAN-LAN connectivity of the router."

MyDLink settings seen only on the Cloud routers. Click the Register button for new accounts.

New QoS UI is similar to the DIR-645 and DIR-865L I tested. Selectable Transmission Rates for Up link go from 128k to to 10Mb

NAT EndPoint setings are not available on this model

IPv6 Supporting:

All other windows, options and features are similar or the same as all other DIR series routers.

Initial Out of the box setup:
I powered off my SB 6120 modem then connected the 826L. Powered on the Modem and then the 826L. Use QRS on my iPhone 4S to initially set up the WiFi and router. Then used the routers web page to set up specific WiFi for Single mode N, WPA2 and AES only. Set up some device reservations and then left everything else pretty much default accept for turning OFF WPS. Left True Gigabit NAT enabled.
Rev A1 v1.01 out of the box.

Speedtest.net results: 50UP/2Down

I like the 15 second reboot, however Reboot Later isn't available.

mydlink Cloud: Mac OSX 10.8.2, Safari v6.0.2 and Java v7 Build 13

Will let it run over the weekend and post more results.

Updated to v1.03 and the WiFi is bad on it for some reason. Downgraded to v1.02 and everything is great now. Takes 5 minutes for the FW update to complete.  ::)

Gaming has been great on XBL. My xbox is wired and roommates is on the 5Ghz radio. Wireless range has been good too. Has greater range too on the WiFi. Definitely more power. This model router will be a great follow on to the DIR-825.

Storage Experiences:
Using a Seagate 2.5" 250Gb SATA drive in a custom USB drive case connected to the router.
1. Used the Storage Setup Wizard to set up a user name and password.
2. Skipped the DDNS option.
3. Recorded Local access instructions that was at http://dlinkrouter:8181 or http://dlinkrouter.local:8181 needs to be used in a web broswer.
4. Save the settings and needed to reboot the router.
5. Use Tools/System to reboot the router.
6. After the reboot, opened IE and used http://dlinkrouter:8181 or http://dlinkrouter.local:8181 which displayed a web file access log in page.
8. Logged in using created user name and password that was created in the setup wizard.
9. SharePort Web Access page is displayed.
10. Selecting any of the available sections did not display any information of what was on the USB drive even though there is various sample file formats residing on the drive.
11. Selecting the Home icon, then the file list icon displays the folder root listing of the drive.
12. Selecting the various sample files on the drive opens the appropriate media renderer and uses the file.
MP3 and MP4 files played correctly. VOB files didn't play however the PC I tested with did not have an appropriate VOB renderer so I presume they would have played if I had the program loaded to view VOB files.

This same process works for Mac OSX. Tested OSX 10.7.5.
NOTE:
I see no network shares or any mappable available network connections in Windows or Mac Networking as if there was something shared out to connect to on the router. I presume that this feature may not be available on the DIR (L) model series routers and is only accessible via the Shareport Web application either locally or remotely using web browsers.

I can manually map to the drive using the following: \\192.168.0.1\usb_A1 in Windows or smb:\\192.168.0.1\usb_A1 for Mac to connect to the drive with out having to use the Shareport application.

USB Printers are not officially supported connecting to the USB port ON the router at this time. However the one time I tested, it worked with my HP LaserJet P2014n using SP v4 and v1.02 FW on the router. Maybe I was lucky.  ::) Users are encouraged to install a USB to LAN Networked Print Server as a suggested alternative solution if there USB printers fail to work on the USB port with SharePort. >http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=55476.msg215831#msg215831
