adding or activating security
« on: June 02, 2012, 08:29:53 AM »

A few months ago I bought a Dir 665 router and had quite a lot of trouble setting it up. After numerous tries I finally tossed the CD that came in the package and used the fold out instructions that were also included in the package. This did work and I got the router working. However it did NOT add any security, and now I am in a quandary as to what to do to add the security. Thanks for any help.

Security as in WiFi password?

If so then you can add security using the routers web page at 192.168.0.1 and go to Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Hi
I think that what I want to do is to put security on my WiFi network. While I have been fooling with computers and even to a small degree with software since the late 60's, I find that there are a myriad of things I do not know or understand. WiFi is one of those things. Looking at Control Panel there is a wireless network setup wizard which (I Think) will do what I want.

Do you know if this wizard will in fact do what I want such as a password and username on the wireless network. If it won't then I will have to "take the bull by the horns" and follow up on what you wrote. If I have to do this, I will probably need some clarifications. I hope that would be ok.

Thanks loads!

It's not that hard if you use the manual settings under Setup/Wireless/Manual. The options are drop down boxes.

I can help you if needed using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.
