Chromecast can't access the internet
« on: May 11, 2014, 03:17:29 PM »

The reason for purchasing the DIR-505 is to build my own network when in a hotel room to connect Chromecast to it and stream content to the TV via Chromecast.

I know that my Chromecast works perfectly, I have already used it before on its own (before purchasing the DIR-505).

My D-Link DIR-505 with FW v1.08 B07 works perfectly. I am lucky enough to have an Ethernet cable in the hotel room. Router/AP mode works perfectly, all my devices (Android, iOS, Windows) on the router SSID have Internet connectivity.

The Chromecast is seen on the network (it has its own IP address of 192.168.100.2) but cannot connect to the Internet for some obscure reason.

I tried to change different router settings, like disable / re-enable WPS, disable / re-enable UPnP, specify a Wi-Fi channel to 6, 1, or 11, then back to auto channel. I turned Wi-Fi security off altogether (no protection at all - unsecure open network). I then did a factory reset of the DIR-505. None of these combinations give Internet connectivity to the Chromecast dongle.

I then tried in Wi-Fi Hotspot mode. This mode works perfectly, but again no Internet connectivity for the Chromecast.

A possibility is that the Hotel (Hilton, using BT as a service provider) does something to block the Chromecast, like black listing a google server that the Chromecast is trying to reach??

Has anyone managed to get internet connectivity for Chromecast behing the DIR-505?

I am really stuck.

As an alternative, I used MAC spoofer on my Android device, hoping to hook the Chromecast directly to the hotel Wi-Fi, but MAC spoofer failed.

Note that the hotel Wi-Fi is an open network, but when I connect, I am redirected to this page
https://www.btopenzone.com:8443/home
where I have to enter a code provided by the hotel.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and get immediate help and information on this.

Let us know what you find out...

Contacted D-Link support by phone. Here is their answer "There is no specific parameter setting to do in the DIR-505. If it does not work, then the problem comes from the Chromecast, not the DIR-505"

Not very helpful. I can't use the DIR-505 for the initial reason I bought it in the first place: build a private network in my hotel room and have the Chromecast connect to this network to access the internet.

I guess next thing I will do is return the DIR-505 and get a refund.

I did an extensive search in the forums, and don't see a single person that confirms that Chromecast works with the DIR-505.

We presume that the 505 would work as a pass thru for any CC connections and traffic thus no need for any configuration by the 505. The CC configuration or problem maybe with the CC and compatibility. I would check with Google to see what model routers are supported by CC.

In the official google Chromecast router compatibility list
https://support.google.com/chromecast/table/3477832?hl=en&ref_topic=3205565

the smallest D-Link router supported is the DIR-605L. But this is too big for me for throwing in a travel bag, as I need a true compact travel router like the DIR-505.

Although the DIR-505 is not in this router compatibility list, it may still work.
So my question: did anyone manage to make chromecast work with the DIR-505?

If I don't hear from someone reporting success in this forum in the next couple of days, then I will assume that the DIR-505 does not support Chromecast, and therefore will return the DIR-505 and get a refund from D-Link.

Too bad that D-Link customer support is not putting more testing effort into this, as the DIR-505 + Chromecast combination is an appealing one for traveling to different hotels.

Thank you for posting this information.

It's possible that Google and D-Link may have tested this out and felt that the travel routers are just not able to handle CC as maybe that most CC users are generally home based users using Home class routers, not mobile routers. Maybe thinking that for travelers, most travelers already have hotel and motel video services available while there, and the duration is so short while staying there, could be one reason why the mobile devices aren't supporting.

Another reason could be that due to HW limitations of these mobile routers, having to deal with heavy video streaming traffic would mean possibly more HW thus making the mobile router bigger than designed. It could be that Google only designed the CC to be home based or for home bases routers. You might ask Google which, if any, mobile routers they have tested and support. I don't see any on that list that I know of.

D-Link is reviewing this at this time. I'll post back if I get any information regarding it.

I returned the DIR-505 to get a refund.

I will definitely purchase another travel router from another brand, one that is supported according to the Google list of supported routers:

https://support.google.com/chromecast/table/3477832?hl=en&ref_topic=3205565

I wasted 6+ hours on this. Bad use of my time.

Yes, it's best to look at services support sites first before getting into something that may not be supported.

Good Luck.

The secret here is to login to the hotel network directly from your computer first, then go into the dlink router setup and have it duplicate your computer's mac address, if you leave it as 000000, it will pass through the mac address of each device.
