Title: DIR-880L disconnects wifi clients
Post by: fuga on December 28, 2017, 05:21:32 AM
DIR-880L, fw 1.07. Dynamic IP.
I have used this for some years without any problems. Now I have noticed problems with wifi clients being randomly disconnected or showing "no internet connectin" when trying to connect to wifi. There are no problems with the ISP. My Windows clients never face this problem. It appears to be mainly related to IOS (mac, iphon, ipad). When reaching approx more than 10-12 clients the disconnection problem seems to appear randomly. The rest of the clients have full wifi access and Internet.  When reconnecting the disconnected client fails, the only way is to reboot the router, and then the client will connect successfully. I also had this issue with an Android TV, but that was resolved after setting the TV to fixed IP. Does anyone experience problems with wifi disconnection with DIR-880L when the number of connected clients reach 10+? Note that there is no significant wifi traffic when the problem appears.

Is the router warmer or hot when this happens? How is the router placed? Good air ventilation around it?

Hardware version: A1
Firmware: 1.07WW
Region: Europe/Sweden
ISP connection via fiber cable using ISP provided media converter/modem. I have talked to the ISP and the can not se any problems on the Internet connection/service. ISP is a large provider in Sweden.
Custom SSID, different on 2.4G and 5G.
Using both 2.4G and 5G.
Channel set to Auto 20/40 MHz, but actually thought I hade changed it to 20MHz only for 2.4G. Perhaps I should set it to 20MHz only (again)? Makes difference??
I have scanned the network neighborhood and selected channel 11 for 2.4GHz and 48 for 5G since they are the least used in the neighborhood.
Security mode WPA/WPA2-Personal.
Devices on wifi: Windows 7 PCs, iPhones, iPads, Android phone, Android TV. Appers that problem with disconnected clients appears when there are approx. 10+ clients connected simultanously. Problem does not appear on the Windows 7 clients. Problem does not appear on Android TV after switching to static IP for this client.
No cordles phone devices in our home.
Have checked wifi network with inSSIDer. Found plenty of networks on 2.4GHz and selected channel with limited interference. 5GHz not very crowded.
I don't use Smart Connect Technology (as far as I know.. :-).
Router placed on wall with good ventilation.

You might try updating FW:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=65883.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=65883.0)

Do a factory reset, load the FW file using IE11 or FF, factory reset, then setup from scratch.

Yes you might use 20Mhz and set channel 11 or 13 on 2.4Ghz. Single mode N and WPA2 only.

Thanks.
Changed 2.4GHz to "802.11n only" and "20 MHz". Will see if that makes any difference.
Security is set to "WPA/WPA2-Personal". There is no other WPA2 option in the list.
I'm using Chrome to administrate and have not noticed any issues. Does it make sense to use IE or FF instead?

I'll wait with the FW update. My current version was the latest fond by the admin interface.
Would the 1.08 work for my Hardware version A1?

Have you updated FW yet?

First reply from Dlink was to install FW 1.08, just like recommended on this forum by FurryNutz.
I'll do that to see if it makes any difference.
Still a little confused why FW 1.08 doesn't show in list of available FW when checked by the router.

D-Link routers only will show "officially released" firmware through the UI. It is best to download the firmware from the support site and manually upload it.

1.08 is still in BETA and going through the final testing and certification before being an "official release" so it will not show up in the UI.

I've just performed the upgrade to FW 1.08.
Made a full factory reset before and after FW upgrade.
Ran the wireless configuration setup wizard from scratch.
Will see if the problem is gone after running a couple of days.

Just want to confirm that after the upgrade to FW 1.08 and one week of use, it seems to be working just fine.
I haven't had any problem with clients being disconnceted (so far) after the upgrade. Previously the problem appeared after one or two days of use.
Hard to know if it was fixed with the new FW or the fact that I performed the factory reset and re-configuration from scratch.
Anyway, I'm glad it's up running and (so far) it works great!

The fact that a BETA version of firmware is being recommended by D-Link is very concerning.   If it is supposed to fix all these issues, then the release notes need to reflect that and it needs to be moved to official release so people can see it in their routers when the check for newest firmware.

Why is it concerning??  It fixes a security issue. Like I said earlier BETA firmware in most cases go through the full testing process before becoming official. In some cases they will put more information in the release notes.

Beta FW has been available for a long time and is part of the development process. It's open and available for both forum users and non forums users as well.

It's up to the users and there choice to load the FW or not. In most cases Beta is the next step for users to try to see if this version helps them in there troubleshooting. And if the Beta doesn't work, users can always revert back from Beta to prior version of FW.
