Title: Router speed test
Post by: sedril on December 13, 2011, 08:00:51 AM
What would be a good way to test the router's speed, wired and wireless?

I was thinking of running a few speedtests, then remove the router and plug directly into the cable modem and run a few more tests and see how they match?

Any other more accurate ways to do it? I'm mainly concerned with wired speeds, not wireless...  Since obviously you can't test wireless after removing the router unless you had other wireless routers to use to test...

Thanks !

Always test wired. Wireless has too many variables and can't provide accurate data.
There are many speed test sites.
Preferred testing is to test with only one device connected.
Might turn off WiFi as well to block while testing.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, I usually use speedtest.net or speakeasy to test, I just upped my internet speed from my ISP and just want to do some testing...  It just seems those speedtest sites aren't the most accurate, but I guess as long as it's consistent, I can get an idea if the router is slowing my speed or not...

My router is probably over 2 years old, I'm not sure what the lifespan is supposed to be on them, I usually change them out yearly but I've liked this 4500 so much I haven't changed it...

Keep it until the day it dies man. They work great. Other than if you really need IPv6. This is a great router.

There are a few good sites to test on. I mainly use speedtest to get a quick either or result. It should be working. If it's not then you'll know maybe there is something wrong. I love my 2.

Just tested kargos out for him. Working great.
