Hi All,

I have a two-level house. WiFi signal is not so good in all the rooms. I recently bought two DIR-878 routers. I am using ONLY one of those routers as i couldn't setup them up as WDS which seems isn't supported on the DIR-878s i have. I also tried WPS feature where one the DIR-878s is main and the other is slave. It didn't work either. The salve DIR-878 wouldn't connect to the master.

My objectives here are mainly to :
1. Use the two DIR-878 routers.
2. Extend network to other parts of the home.
2. Have ONE wireless home-network accessible throughout the house.

Thx in advance for any help / guidance.

PS. I don't know much about networking / routing. Its all self taught so far.

  • What region are you located?

The DIR-878 doesn't support wireless client mode, i.e. bridge mode.
Only these model router support wireless bridge mode:
Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Access Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP)

You can configure the 2nd 878 for wired AP mode:
Turning a router into an AP.
This configuration needs a LAN cable between the 1st 878 and the 2nd 878.

You will not be able to connect the 2 DIR-878s wirelessly to each other. If you can use an Ethernet cable, then you can connect to the 2nd router to its LAN port, not the Internet port. You will need to disable UPnP and DHCP on the 2nd router and assign a static IP address since it cannot receive DHCP from the first router.

It is best to return one of the routers and buy either a range extender or an access point.
