Just Bought DIR-890
« on: January 30, 2015, 08:09:43 AM »

After putting up with some of the most buggy firmware in an asus AC87U for 6 months, I decided I couldn't take it anymore.  Constant restarts and reapplying of settings...I gave up.

Read all the reviews on new egg.  And just about everybody had some kind of problem, but the reports of excellent customer service from Dlink convinced me to take the plunge.

I will be getting this in few days.  Are there any odd, frequent things going on with the device I should be aware of when I first start it up.  I understand the device was just launched, so I am expecting some bugs.

Thank you for your time.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Aside the QoS and IP Reservation problems, hasn't been alot of issues seen. Only a few users so far have posted about it. D-Link is aware of the issues and is working to correct them for launch time for USA.  ;)

I am in the USA.

So should I disable QOS and manually assign IP's for the time being?

Thanks!

QoS is some what automatic. I believe it only actives when a device is placed in the QoS section. So if you don't put anything there, don't worry about it.

The IP address issue maybe seen if you reserve and IP address for a device. Should you disconnect the device for any reason and no longer have the device in your possession, the IP address reservation is still present and can not be removed on the reservation table since the device icon reservation is only seen when the device is online and connected. D-Link is working on a solution to fix this. You can use IP reservations and is recommended for devices that need management by the router. Just if you need to get rid of a device or not going to use it with the router, disable the reservation first before disconnecting the device or getting rid of the device.

What ISP Service do you have and what mfr and model # ISP modem do you use?
What ISP Speed package do you have UP and Down?

So the time came yesterday..dun dun dun...big box from new egg.  Inside it was the 890 router and some cat7 cable.  Decided it was time to switch out all my cat 5 cable ( yes I know, dont mock me).  I will admit to being worried about all this.  I bought the asus 87u when it first came out, and had nothing but problems with it.  And here I am purchasing another expensive router that is very new to the community.

My isp is Baja Broadband.  I pay for 50mb down and 5mb up.  Of course I never really see that speed except during off hours at like midnight.  But I am fine with that, as Iong as I get close.  Well about 5 months back, pretty soon after getting that asus router, i started having major problems.  Huge packet losses and speeds below 25 mb during peak hours.  The packet loss was so bad I was unable to play some games like neverwinter and I could only play on one server with World of Tanks.  What games were playable I would get lag spikes lasting 5 to 10 sec.  I just accepted it was my isp causing this, which they couldn't figure out the problem, and knowing I was going to be moving soon, I didn't fight it.  Well there was enough weird things going on with my asus router, like constantly having to reset it, I wondered if my router was causing the problems all along.  What I couldn't accept though is that a router would cause me packet loss.  Well damn the torpedoes, lets get this dlink router.

I can happily say with some frustration, that it was practically all the router.  Now I am not running any complicated setups.  I have mixed wired and wireless connections with no bridges.  Haven't tuned much on the router, a lot is at default settings.  Have not messed with firewall settings.  Matter of fact the only thing that isn't default is I turned on the multicast settings and changed the router's ip to 192.168.1.1.  That is it, and everything is glorious.  Everything connected no problems and I am getting almost 0 packet loss.  Speed is better at 35 mb during peak hours.  Probably my isp there but I will take that with no packet loss.

I have nothing ill to say of this router at this time.  It is doing exactly what I want it to do.  Time will tell though.  If I can help anybody out with problems/troubleshooting please feel free to ask here or email me.  Please understand though, my scope of networking knowledge is limited.

Cheers

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Are you wired or wireless for gaming? Wired is preferred...

I am actually wireless for gaming.  Ya I know wired is preferred, but it is not option where my gaming stuff is located.

I really just came here to say I think you'll be happy with D-Link. I switched from Netgear to D-Link and it's been awesome. No disconnects what so ever. Furrynutz has been very helpful throughout the years.

I may buy this next week when I get paid. I'll be running it on a 105Mbps down connection / 10Mbps up. I usually get between 110-120Mbps down, and 10-12Mbps up. Comcast. Wired for gaming 1 foot away from the modem. I have a Motorola SB6141. Is there a better modem I should look at or keep this? Oops.. sorry don't mean to hijack your thread.

If the 6141 is working to ISP and your specs, then keep it. SB 6 series modems are good modems.

Let us know what you get and how it goes if you get a 890L. v1.03 brings in good things and my router is running well now.  ;)
