Open File - Security Warning (workaround)
« on: May 10, 2010, 06:11:43 AM »

Hi

Ever since day one of using my DNS-323 on Windows XP/Vista and 7 I have always received a "Open File - Security Warning" prompt when attempting to open a file from the NAS in Windows.

Windows seems to think the NAS is in the Internet zone, rather than the Intranet. I managed to work around the problem by unchecking the "Automatically detect intranet network" box in Internet Explorer 8. (Internet Options > Security > Local intranet -> Sites) and making sure the bottom three checkboxes are still checked.

I could have achieved the same result by adding my NAS's host name to "Sites" under "Advanced" or under "Local intranet" or "Trusted Sites".

It's great this works, but why would IE/Windows think the NAS was on the Internet anyway?

This is a common issue, I've had the same thing for other network shares on computers as well.  Never did understand the thinking behind it, I just know how to fix it now. :D

Oh, I knew years ago, but I'm sure this may help a bunch of folks that don't realize that IE affects their local network. :D

I knew that much, just not which of the 14,000 level deep hidden options to enable/disable.  ::)
