I have a DIR-865L using a gigabyte cable modem. I have connected directly through the modem using manual DNS settings for my device with no trouble.

I want the manual DNS settings in the router so that all devices behind the modem use the manual DNS settings from the modem.  I cannot change the DNS settings in the modem or in some devices downstream from the router.

When I restore my device settings to auto DNS, reset and configure the router using manual network setup and putting in the two DNS addresses I want to use, I cannot connect to the sites I want.  I have internet connection but the specific sites I want to visit using the DNS settings won't work.

If I set the router up as a static IP with the same DNS settings, it will work for all devices downstream to let me reach those sites.  It does create other connectivity problems within the network that should be avoidable by using the router in normal dynamic mode without a static IP.  But when I go that route, the router does not appear to use the DNS settings I input in the manual network setup.

Any suggestions?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Be sure to also reboot all devices or clear the DNS cache after changing router DNS addresses.

Hi.  The cable modem is a Thomson DCM 476. 

I have been rebooting everything after making changes and will in future. Thanks.

Router version A1

It came loaded with 1.02, updated to 1.03 by me on install.  I could not get things working with 1.03.  New release in my region, 1.04 has been installed.  I am located in Canada.

I have not found the solution that I was looking for but I have found something that works for me.

I have set the router to static IP.  By doing this, it does use the DNS settings that I input to it.  I had a DIR-601 and it worked fine using dynamic IP and manual DNS.  I have no idea why this router won't behave the same way but given that this solution is working for me now, I am going to leave it as it is with the static IP.

Possible that your ISP Modem or service could be impacting this as well. I haven't seen this issue before however I use a different ISP modem.

If you set up custom DNS IP addresses and turn OFF DNS relay, and reboot the router and ALL connected devices, everything should work. I wonder if your ISP might not allow the use of custom DNS addresses.  

Did you set up the router from scratch after sending the FW file and doing one more factory update?

Anything? I too have this issue...when swapping back to my old E4200 the issue is gone.

Is Linksys a better solution?

Hahaa.. 
I spent 1 Hr to figure it out -    SOLVED... 

The DNS settings are derived from your PARENTAL CONTROL / SECURITY OPTIONS.
Set this option to NONE:Custom DNS / than goto internet>manual settings> DNS options.
Should work..
