DIR-857 constantly blocking google
« on: December 12, 2013, 11:14:33 AM »

I tried to search for this solution but I had no luck with the forum search results.

I would say 3 times a day, my router blocks WIRELESS access to Google and all Google associated properties.  There are no issues from wired base computers.  The wireless block is only temporary and it usually comes back within 3 minutes.

Why is this happening?

This seems odd...something in any filtering you have configured for WiFi devices?
What Wireless devices do you have?
Has a factory reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Router and Wired Configurations
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn On/Off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Thanks for getting back.  A little background.  I recently moved from Ontario to Saskatchewan. The issue persisted in both locations even though I was on different ISPs and modem manufacturers.

My current ISP is Sasktel and I believe it is DSL service
My modem is actiontec v1000h
Good advice, I'll check on the MTU with the ISP and I'll report back if that makes a difference

The devices I have in my household are 3 iPads, 3 iPhones, 1 remote control

I also am using a WAP from Dlink DAP-1525

I'll try those other suggestions.  Thanks.

  • If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router

Seems like odd behavior for sure if only WiFi devices are being block with only Google. I'd turn OFF the DAP and directly connect to the 857 first and test to figure things out. Once you get it going, then turn on the DAP.

What mode is the DAP running in? AP?

I'll look into it more. The problem is that in my other house (3 months ago) the router connected with modem without a router and had the same issue.  I'll give it a shot though.

Also, coincidentally I was sent a link today on my iphone and it couldn't connect to the site. So it would appear as if the problem is not exclusive to Google.  I'll let you know what happens.

What I'm not understanding is why I can't access the website for about 5 minutes and the suddenly, the issue corrects itself.  Could this be a defective router?

Since the issue of certain sites not being available only affected wireless devices. I fooled around with a couple of settings.  It appears as if the Auto Channel Selection was the issue.  I've disabled it and set the channel to 44.

I have a DIR-857 in my home and a DAP-1525 that I'm using as an access point.  My question is, should both devices be on the same channel?  Currently, I have one device set to channel 44 and the other to 40.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

They need to be on different channels. Farthest appart as possible. 36 and the other on 149 if you can.

With regards to the 2.4 ghz band, I've left that on auto channel, should I change this?

The access point does not broadcast in 2.4 Ghz band. In that circumstance, should I still set the router to one of those two channels or does it matter?

Thanks for the support; very helpful.

I thought I had this thing figured out.  I'm still having issues unfortunately.

When I reserve devices on my home network for a certain IP, are some of them still supposed to appear in the list of Dynamic DHCP clients?

Also, when I look at the wireless status of some of my devices, the router shows me IP addresses that look like 0.0.0.0  Is this normal?  Sometimes the 0.0.0.0 will change to a 192.168.0.114 as I'm looking at the status panel.

I tried every one of your suggestions that you listed above. I'm still not having any luck.  Again, no issues with wired devices. The issues come from my wired connections.

They should appear in the Dynamic List with a Reserved status or Never maybe...

Hmm..I might do this, hassle however, factory reset. Power off EVERYTHING accept for one wired PC. Get it reserved. Save settings and power on the next device. Keep doing this until you get them all reserved. Reboots might need to be done each time to ensure the settings are saved well.

I'd set up the SSID and leave the security open for now while your doing this. Once you get it all reserved. Test the wireless devices to ensure they are getting internet to correct sites. Test each device out. If you can get to this and it working. Turn on WPA2/AES only or Try Mixed TPIK and AES.

Let us know...

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

"They should appear in the Dynamic List with a Reserved status or Never maybe..."  You lost me on this sentence.  Should the items appear in the Dynamic List or not?

For now, it appears as if everything is working out OK.  If things don't, I definitely would like someone to review my settings.

Thanks a lot.
