is there a way to get windows 7 to be able to index the NAS?  seems really stupid that windows 7 cant index networked drives...without having to "offline" which copies everything...wee-todd-id!
anyways, i may be missing something very basic, like enable upnp, which im in the process of, but....any thoughts?

I haven't tried this, but did you map the NAS to a drive letter in the Win7 system?  Again, I don't know if this works, I don't find the Win7 library all that useful anyway.

yea, I've been doing that from day one.  I have access to the files no problem.

I've recently upgraded to win7 and want to add all my pics/music to libraries, but win7 won't index networked drive.

smackdown - that worked:::see below:
1. Create a temp folder on your hard drive i.e. c:\shares

2. Create another folder in the above folder. i.e. c:\shares\pictures

3. Link the Library to this folder.

4. Delete the folder (c:\shares\pictures).

5. Use the mklink in an elevated command prompt to make a symbolic link. Name the link the same as the folder you created above. i.e -
mklink /d c:\shares\pictures \\server\pictures

6. Done. Now you have a non-indexed network path as a library.

For those layman like me I used following link to set up mine because the term "server" is a generic term. You need to change to your situation.

mklink /d c:\shares\pictures \\DLINK-4AAC9F\Volume_1\pictures

Again following are for newbie like me. You need to open a command prompt using a right click and open as an administrator. You can copy and paste above link only with right mouse click. Change the names as accordingly.

I had exactly the same issue, but found that you CAN add network folders (without indexing them) through windows media centre. Once they're added in WMC they are then usable by Media player etc.

Once installed and rebooted you have the option to include mapped network drives to the local index without having to make files available offline.

What I always do seems extremely simple but works. I open my user folder, which contains the folders for Music, Videos, Pictures, etc.

Then I right click on a folder, go to properties, Location tab, and change the path so it points to my NAS.

The problem with Windows not being able to index any shares is not with Windows, but with the way Windows Search was set up. The server has to index itself, and give Windows the index file (xml) when required. So really, it's the NAS that has to support this, not Windows.

Makes sense too: it would be stupid if you would need to index a network share from each device that accesses it. And oh, the plugin mentioned above doesn't work on Windows 7
