Reason codes explained??
« on: August 23, 2009, 07:48:34 PM »

I recently switched routers to the DIR-615 and I'm trying to troubleshoot why one of our laptops keeps losing the IP address and gets a self-assigned IP address.  I see the following messages in the log, I am wondering if the reason codes are listed and explained somewhere?  I tried searching the manual but could not find any information.

>Wireless system with Mac address 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx deauthenticate reason 1
>Wireless system with Mac address 00:1f:xx:xx:xx:xx disassociate reason 8

I have the same type of story.  I recently installed a DIR-615.  Ever since I started using a laptop I get ridiculous numbers of lines like:

Wireless system with Mac address 00:1a:xx:xx:xx:xx disassociate reason 8

in the log file.  What does reason 8 mean?  Where can I find out more?

Hey look at that.  Cicso's web http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/3.2/configuration/guide/c32err.html site gives a list of the reason codes.  I still don't understand why it's disociating, but here is my reason code in English.

I was having the same problem with some of my laptops (mostly older ones), IP address would be assigned by the router, the laptop would receive the address but then loose it. The reason code in the router log was 8. Looked the code up at the website previously mentioned a got a message of “Operating System moved the client to another access point using non-aggressive load balancing”.

So based on that and some other info I dug up in the logs I changed the WPA Mode on the router from “Auto” to “WPA2 Only” and presto no more problems. It actually didn’t matter if I choose “WPA Only” or “WPA2 Only” in both cases it resolved the problems I was seeing.
Although it did not appear to have a impact on the problem, at least on the 2 laptops I initially tested the fix with, I did subsequently changed the “Cipher Key” from “TKIP and AES” to just “AES” just to be sure.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Check under Setup/Wireless for these settings using the routers web page found at 192.168.0.1.
