Title: Any way to extend the power cord?
Post by: bournes on December 25, 2016, 01:13:26 PM
The power cord is pretty short of probably around 1meters. Is there a way to extend it as i would like to route the cable from outside my house. thanks.

Get some usb adapters and line.  Should work.
Or maybe any usb line with enough power?

the AC power adapter has a connector that looks like a micro-usb connector to me. so does it work if i find some super long microusb cable?

So you are routing the power supply from outside your house, to inside?

Is the camera outside?

I just ran a USB 3.0 IO Gear 9 ft extender cable to the camera - it does power up, but fails to connect wirelessly. It's not getting enough juice.  When i remove the extender, the usb cable and 2.1 Amp Samsung fast charger work.  Its pulling .8x watts when connected wirelessly. (I also have an micro sd card in there, so that's pulling some power). Pulling the card out didn't help.   I don't think it is going to work with a 9FT cable.

You might have better luck with a power cord, preferably something thick enough...

Any chance of getting actual 110 power closer to the cameras remote location? Like an outside approved power extension cable?

yea the camera is outside. The power adapter that comes with this camera has a length of about 3ft which is why im thinking if i could buy a super long micro usb cable as a replacement for extension since the port that connects to the camera seems to be micro usb.

Actually currently, im running a power extension from the power source. But it looks messy and ugly, which is why im thinking of extending the power adapter cable to the power source.  :-\

Where outside? The 960l isn't weather proof.  Moisture/freezing/heat cycles should kill it.

We recommend not using this model camera outside. This is an indoor camera. D-Link has other outside supporting cameras.

after reading this post, seems cable length and thickness should be consider.   960L is rated 5V 2Amp.

I also need to extend the power cable, will probably try first with additional 1-meter.

Any power extensions needed should be done with the main power cable up to the DCS's power adapter. The power adapter cable should not be extended between the power adapter block and the end plug the plugs into the camera.

I just had an aha moment ...

I have 2 960ls, the NEWER one in my kitchen - it is about a 3.5ft cord, DLINK branded power supply, thin cable, both wires can be felt.

The older one - as you mention about cable length and thickness, I pulled it out, and it's  an 8.x ft cable, the wires are inside a single round casing.
The power brick is an Asian Power Device brand, and it is rated as you mentioned - 5V 2Amp.  I am sure this is the correct power supply - as I remember having it wrapped around into another outlet - and it had the length.

I never realized I was short changed with the newer version.

I know my Western Digital external drives come with Asian Power Device adapters - but I don't remember any with the odd thick end to plug in.

Also - the oringinal DCS-2630L I bought has the same Asian Power Device adapter and power rating, and it is also an 8.xft type cable.

I'm in the USA.

yes agree, I did not push thru with extending the micro-usb because it might give less current/power to 960L.
I just use a main power extension cable from mains to DCS's power adapter.
