Port Forwarding
« on: August 21, 2012, 12:42:43 PM »

After 3 weeks of headaches with this router I FINALLY got it working after upgrading to the new firmware and then doing a factory reset. Well now I'm trying to set up some of my IP cameras and my home server, and I can't get port forwarding to work for any of my devices. I can remotely access my router using my IP address (eg http://123.23.45.231:8080), however I can't access any of the other ports. For example one of my IP cameras in on port 3000 so I'll type http://123.23.45.231:3000 and nothign happens. This is how I would access my devices on my old router with no problem.

Anyone else have this issue? Well I know people do because I've seen it mentioned in several reviews on various websites. But any ideas on how I can fix it? I currently have QoS turned off, DNS Relay On, DHCP Server enabled with a DHCP Reservation list set up with all of my devices (and I've double checked all of the device's MAC & IP address and they all match), and all of the devices that I want ports forwarded to set up in the Port Forwarding menu.

I'm about to go all Office Space on this thing.

Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

How do you have the router configured for PF?

Apparently I'm a moron. I didn't realize I needed to check the box next to each port forward that I set up. There should really be a "Check to enable" or "Check to make active" at the top of the column of boxes, because I assumed by putting in the device name, port, IP address, and setting it to "always" that would turn it on. Nowhere does it indicate that the box needs to be checked. Maybe that's a D-Link thing because none of my other routers have been that way (Linksys, Netgear, TP-Link, etc).

So did that resolve your problem?

Most DLink routers don't have the check mark enabled. Just always been known that when you enter in the values, you need to check mark it to enable it then save and reboot.

Well now that I checked those boxes port forwarding works, but as luck would have it now I'm back to having the connectivity issues that I was having before the firmware update. It had been running rock solid without one single hiccup until just a few minutes ago when I enabled the forwarding, and now since then it has lost connection to the internet at least a dozen times. How in the world would the simple act of enabling forwarding on 4 ports (443, 3000, 3001) cause it to become unstable!?!?  This router SUCKS.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.
What application is this forwarding needed for?
I don't think that port 443 really needs to be forwarded however anything is possible. I know that for XBL gaming, they recommend it, however I've never had to.

Hard to believe that your seeing all this when most others are working just fine.  ???

Port 443 is for a secure connection to my Windows Home Server. Normally one would use port 80 for that and use an unsecured connection, but my ISP blocks port 80.

And I don't think reviewing the rest of my settings will help anything since everything was working perfectly until I enabled port forwarding on those 3 ports, and now my router is disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet every 10-15 minutes just like it used to do before I the firmware upgrade & factory reset. I guess I can turn the forwarding back off and see if that helps, but it just seems like this router is one headache after another. As soon as I fix one problem, another one pops up. Never had this much trouble with any router in my entire life.

How do you have the router configured for PF? I enter the port that I want forwarded and the destination IP address for that port, pretty straightforward.
What application is this forwarding needed for? This for these IP Cameras? I need port 443 for WHS and the others are for my IP cameras.

And I figured out what was causing the router to lose connection. Any time I would try to access a device through an incoming port the router would freeze up and reboot. So for example if I would access my IP camera it would work fine for about 2-3 minutes, then I'd lose the connection, and then it would be back up in 1-2 minutes. Same thing happens when I try to access my home server. I had someone at home watching the router as I was accessing devices remotely, and they confirmed that the router was rebooting itself when I would lose the connection. So for some reason the incoming connections that are being routed through the ports that I have set up are causing it to lock up. I'm about ready to throw in the towel.

I'm wondering if there is a problem HW wise with router that can't get connected via port forwarding and is crashing the router.

I recommend contacting DLink support, level 2 on the phone and have them review your router settings and port forward settings. Are there any log entries after this happens? Is so, let then know and have them review the logs.

Keep us posted on how it goes.
