DSR-250 Problem connecting to L2TP server from MAC OS client
« on: December 06, 2017, 02:05:38 PM »

I've enabled the L2TP server and configured a IPsec policy.  I've contacted D-Link Support and gone over the configuration with them.  As far as they are concerned, everything is correctly configured.  I can connect with Windows 10 VPN clients using the built in client.  I can also connect with iPhone and iPad clients.  I cannot connect with Macbook Pro clients, both of which are running the latest version of High Sierra OS.  I've tried the built in VPN client and have also installed Shimo and tried its L2TP client.  I can't connect with either.  I have turned off the firewall on the Macs.  I always get the same error "VPN server not responding" or words to that effect.  All clients are configured correctly.

Are any of you connecting Mac clients running High Sierra to the L2TP server on a DSR 250?  If so, please share your IPsec policy and other configuration settings.  If you had the problem and have resolved it, please tell me how you did it.  D-link support thinks its a problem with the OS.  Apple hasn't figured out yet where the problem lies.

Regards

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

I presume if MS platforms are connection and Apple doesn't, you will need to have Apple delve into this on there side...
Can you try a Mac with Older OSX version installed to see if an older version of OSX connects?

The hardware version is A4. The firmware version is 3.11B101H_WW.  I am in the United States. My provider at the server is Grande Communications.  It's a fiber network.  The clients are on various ISP networks.  At home I am on Spectrum, formerly Time Warner Cable.  However, we've tried to connect from various locations with the same result.  I was on the phone for a loooong time yesterday with a service tech from an Apple sub=contractor who tried to connect with my VPN server on his MacBook (located in New Jersey) and he was unable to connect.

I will try to find a Mac with an older operating system.  I suspect that it is an issue with the enhanced security features in the new OS which might require a different configuration of the IPsec policy.

However, I can't reach the local network behind the VPN server with Sierra OS.

I resolved the problem on the Sierra OS machine.  It was a configuration issue on my file server.  I still cannot connect to the VPN server with the High Sierra OS machine.  Looking at the Apple Support Community postings, I see a lot of post about problems connecting to a VPN server after upgrading. I'll contact Apple Support and see if I can resolve the problem.

An update for High Sierra became available today.  I installed it and it fixed the problem.  In order to reach the resources on the remote network, I have to change the IPv6 setting to local link only.
