Nas to USB backup : Backup fail (Error Code:8).
« on: January 09, 2017, 09:25:52 AM »

Hi,
I tried several time to start a backup from NAS to USB but every time the result is :
Backup fail (Error Code:8).
I set the backup Enable
Then "NAS to USB"
Sorce "Volume_1"
Destination "USBDisk1_1/Backup"
Type : Copy
After Saving the settings  I pressed the USB Button , the leds start to blink for few second then they stop and the status becomes : Backup fail (Error Code:8).
Any hints ?
How does the backup work ?
Where are a listof error codes ?
Thanks
Marcello

Does the Verbatim 2Tb drive have it's own power adapter or just gets the power from the DNS?

What Hardware version is your DNS = Rev A

Hmmm split cable? This from the Mfr?

Not sure if this could be causing problems or not. If there is some excess power getting back into the DNS improperly, could be a cause.

Does the DNS work with out this power adapter being connected or it is needed?

Hi
it is a usb split cable only for additional power. I use it often on old PC with low power USB port, I assure you that it work fine.
However the Verbatim hardware specification tell that I need USB with output 5V 1A
I tried also with a 20cm USB cable no splitted, same error.
What does means "error code 8" ?
THanks

I don't have any information on this error code. Your the first person to post about this to my knowledge. I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

I think the problem is your trying to transfer (backup) from the NAS to your USB drive.  This will not happen unless you can modify the NAS firmware.  The USB port is designed as a print server port for USB printers and as an input port for transferring from a USB hard disk to the NAS for storage (the USB port can supply about 750mA).

Both the local and remote backup programs are designed to do two things. 1) a NAS to another NAS backup (this is what we use) and 2) a NAS to Linux server (this is what we use to backup to our storage array).

Remember the DNS-327l is first and foremost a Network Attached Storage device wit the main emphasis on the Storage.  It can do other things bit they are, at best, only secondary functions.
