Hi All,
I'm looking to setup a separate wifi for my tenant downstairs. If I setup my 505 in Hotspot mode with different SSID and password, is my original network safe? ( Lets assume hes not a hacker or anything). For example, if i have a file sharing network on the original network, would he be able to see that if connected to the Hotspot network?

I don't see that the model has wireless isolation, so yes, they would be able to see your file and printer sharing. Also, if you set it up as a Hotspot, you would need another router broadcasting the wifi signal the hotspot would connect to to share. Instead you would want to set it in router or AP mode (depending on if it's your only router) and use "Guest Zone". See page 60 of manual (http://www.dlink.com/fr/fr/-/media/consumer_products/dir/dir-505/manual/dir_505_manual_a1_en.pdf) for more info.

Thanks for your reply Harry. Guest zone is exactly what I was looking for, except I don't have a hardline connection. My ISP is all wireless modems and there is no plug in for a cable anymore, so AP mode wouldn't work unfortunately.

Just curious, but who is your ISP and what model modem/gateway is it? Usually even wireless ISP have modem/AP you can run a wired connection to. I don't think Guest Zone works in Hotspot mode. It can connect to one Wifi network, and even broadcast it's own wifi network, but it can't then broadcast a 3rd wifi network for the Guest Zone. I can't find proof of this in the manual, but it doesn't seem like it was designed to do it.

Worst case would be to set it up, and connect to it, and see what you can see.
But I agree with Harry - you'll probably see everything.

The better option would be to set up a guest network on your main router, and then use the DIR-505 in Hotspot mode to connect to it. That way the Guest Network is isolated from your main network, and the Guest Network doesn't interfere with the main wifi's signal.

Any status on this? ???
