With more and more pc's at home i'm starting to feel the need for a simple mail server. Is that possible?

Are you planning to run a purely internal mail system?  If not, I'd suggest you stick with google mail or something similar - there's a lot more to running your own email server than meets the eye, and even if you want your own domain etc., google is still a pretty good deal.
