what 2tb hard drive is recommended
« on: December 08, 2010, 03:26:47 PM »

Just bought the dns 323 and had planned to buy the 2tb wd caviar green but after all the negative things ive been reading i decided against it. I just want 2 decent 2tb hard drives for use in the device. If not 2tb then perhaps 1.5tb instead. What are your recommendations? Ill be using them for storage and to stream 1080p blurays to a playstation 3.

Thanks in advance

The WR20EADS drives seem to be working fine for me, but I think then are no longer generally available.
Have you reviewed the list of supported drives See http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=672.0.

I did read it yes. I just wanted to know what people recommend based on streaming 1080p video as well if that even makes a difference with the hard drive selection or if its down to how its connected in my network. It was a little confusing to see a list of WD drives and then another thread saying they dont work properly though. I was hoping for a WD drive but i dont want to have problems with my data later on. Ive mainly been told to stay away from seagate.

I use the Hitachi 7K2000 which are 7200rpm 512 byte sectors.  Since it does not use the 4k sectors it should not be a problem.

I had a failure on my WD Caviar Green 2TB drive and I took Terry's recommendation on the Hitachi (thanks again Terry!).  It seems to be working fine here.

my 2cents...  2tb Seagates 5900 rpm affordable and working great in my rig.  Hitachi would be my second choice.

So im looking at a few hitachis and am wondering if anyone has had good/bad experiences with the TSD-1000H5, HD31000 IDK/7K or the H450-9002? Theyre all roughly the same price give or take $10-$20 so which of the three is best? I may just go with 1tb seeing as how 2tb i cant seem to find any decent ones. Im mainly looking at tigerdirect fututreshop and bestbuy right now.

It really doesn't matter you know. All hard drives have the potential to fail regardless of brand. Every manufacturer has released a bad batch at one time or another. 10 years ago I thought Maxtor was bad because one by one they failed in 30 servers. They are now part of Seagate, and have never had an issue with a Seagate. But I'm sure plenty of people have. I went for the cheapest 2TB drive from a known brand. That for me was the Samsung F3. Could it fail tomorrow? Absolutely. Would I care? Not really. I have 4 other copies and a warranty.

Set everything up and it works great when I'm hardwired to my router when using my PC. When I'm not hardwired, my PC refuses to connect to the 323, hanging when I click network. It allows me to close the window but every time I try it, it never connects. Any ideas?

The Hitachi 2TB Deskstar that I bought to replace my dead Caviar Green has ceased working on my 323 and causes a constant activity light on the 323.  The drive also makes a sort of grinding sound when seeking.  I removed the hitachi and installed it in a usb enclosure and connected it to my pc and WINXP disk management says the drive is healthy although it cannot read the ext3 partitions.

So I have to say by my experience that the Hitachi 2TB Deskstar  (IDK/7K) version is not compatible in my 323 unfortunately

Please ignore my statement above about the Hitachi Deskstar drive.  It does work.  Turns out my DNS-323 has a bad Right Slot.  Sorry for the misleading post... my bad.

I bought one WD20EARS 2 TB last month in France. For now, it works fine.
