How to access USB drive contents connected to a router

instructions in the FAQ for Router Basics - "How to access USB drive contents connected to a router" resolved the issue I was having trying to access the USB drive I connected to my DIR-885L Router as a test of that functionality. The only issue I see with that method is that every time Microsoft issues a major update to Windows 10 they disable SMBv1 (which they say is a security hazard and don't use it). Is there another/"better" way to share a USB drive across my LAN from the router's USB port? Do newer routers have "improved" connectivity software/firmware so that they'll play nice with Microsoft's current SMB v2/v3 protocols? Are there any plans to update firmware on older routers to support the newer protocols?

* What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
* Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
* What region are you located?
Unfortunately SMBv1 needs to be re-enabled if after MS updates and disables it.

Have no information if new routers support SMBv2/3. I presume newer routers that may appear later on this year or next will be supporting possibly.
D-Link doesn't usually bring new features or update routers that have entered into EOL status. If any updates happen, it would be for a security patch if something was needed there.

I have not seen any major problems with having SMBv1 enabled on windows 10. And I have two NAS units from D-Link. Been safe and working well with my two Windows 10 PCs. I do have Windows 7 for back up if needed.
