Title: DSR-150N VPN with Comcast Business Class
Post by: pacifico on November 14, 2013, 11:08:52 AM
Disclaimer: Not an IT guy, I just happen to know more than the boss to be stuck with configuring the network.

My work has business class Comcast with an SMC Router. When we got the 150N router we just turned it into an access point by turning off the DHCP Server, so the that SMC Router would give out LAN IP's. But now I want to create a VPN using the DSR-150N as the VPN Server. And what I'm understanding is that you need to use the WAN port of the 150N for others outside to connect to the VPN. Can I still use the WAN port on the 150N if it's not being used as a DHCP Server? And is there a way to have the VPN Server be behind the main Router or do I have to use the 150N as the main router for the network for the VPN to work?

Thanks!

The DSR would need to be in router mode for any VPN work. Check to see if the main host router has a DMZ.

Change tue DSR back to full riuter mode and connect the WAN port to the ISP main router. Boot up te DSR and find tye WAN ip address it gets from the main router. Reserve this address on the main host routet then input this address into the main host routers DMZ. This should prevent any conection issues amd help some with double NAT. Try to set up you VPN as needed on the DSR. Hope this will work for you.

To make it easier for myself the DSR router is a standalone router, that no computers are connected to, and is connected to a switch that all the other computers are using the WAN port. It's connecting to the internet. I just connected one server to it to test it out if I see it when if the VPN connects. And entered the router IP into the DMZ. So far it's not working. When try to connect from outside of my work there is no established connection.  Would a 1-to-1 NAT work?

I recommend testing my suggestion out. I think to get VPN working correctly, you'll need to use the WAN and LAN ports to effect correct use of VPN on the DSR.

We decided to scrap the DSR-150 as it was having connectivity issues with not just the VPN but with other services as well. Thanks for all your help!
