How could I have lost both drives in an instant?
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:17:20 PM »

Hi, Hopefully someone can point me to the right answer here.
I shutdown my 321, lifted it, and dusted under it.
Turned it back on and now I have emails telling me both drives have failed!

In Status/Physical disk info, it's blank
In Tools, RAID, current RAID Type, it's blank.

I have a recent backup of the settings, tried to restore it, same result.

I'm assuming the 321's circuits are shot.
The Hard drives are mirrored, FW is 1.02

Is it possible to connect one of the drives via USB to a linux box to copy the data off? I don't have the USB part but I'll get one tomorrow.

Thanks

update: I was able to use Ext2IFS_1_11a.exe in an XP VM and I can see that both drives are OK. At least I can copy my date over to the new RAID when I build one.
Any idea which part failed and where to get a replacement?

Did you make sure both HDDs were properly seated in the DNS-321? It's possible one or both HDDs were dislodged when you lifted the device.

Thanks Java, I already got access to my data.
I'm trying to figure out if I can fix the DNS321. Shame to have to throw it out. There has to be parts somewhere

I'm glad you got the hard part done (perhaps). It seems like replacement parts are far and few between, unless other forum members have a dead unit they are willing to give up for parts.

The DNS-321 may still be working. Try upgrading the firmware and format one (or perhaps two) HDDs and see what happens...

Here's another route you can also try: DNS-321/323 - Alternative Firmware - Alt-F

Thanks Java, that's an interesting FW. I'm going to tried, nothing to lose now :)

Post back and let us know how the new FW works out if you decide to choose that path.  ;)
Also, from what you describe (symptom-wise), it's possible the DNS-321 is still working normally and some random event/corruption occurred that made the volumes unavailable.

I'm afraid I don't have any worthwhile feedback.
I like the FW, I wish I had found it in the past, it has a lot of good features.
But, alas, my DNS-321 is hosed. I will not recognize any drives. I've tried several drives and It always reports no drives detected. :(

I'm sorry to hear the bad news. The DNS-321 was D-Link's first generation NAS and it sounds like your unit had a long life. D-Link has already released two subsequent generations of ShareCenters beyond the DNS-321 (DNS-321 > DNS-320 > DNS-320L).
