Title: My 942L doesn't send email
Post by: mattteo on February 06, 2014, 01:09:22 AM
Hi to all and thanks in advance.

I can't find the proper configuration to enable my 942 to send emails.

I followed instructions found on this forum but it continues to not work.

Here are the details:
Firmware: 1.22
Recipient E-mail Address: my_not_gmail_address
Smtp Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
Username: my_mail@gmail.com
Password: my gmail password
Sender Email address: my_mail@gmail.com
Use SSL-TLS: SSL-TLS

When I press test button, it shows me this message: "Send a test mail failure". No other details.  :(

I also tried the following steps:
- change the port to 587
- use my_mail (without @gmail) as username
- change the SSL-TLS option to STARTTLS

None of these worked.

I tried to use the ftp function to see if the camera reaches Internet and it worked, so the camera is correctly configured to access internet.

Any suggest?

Thanks, thanks, thanks.

Update:

I had even try with the hotmail settings (smtp.live.com and my @hotmail.com account).

Sometimes it works and sometimes not.

It would be great if it showed what is the error during sending mail!
Host unreachable? Wrong authentication? Permission denied? Or whatever it is...

Even in the camera log, it doesn't show anything. Only that it failed.  :(

DLINK, if you're hearing this, put the errors in the log, thanks!  :-* ;)

So far I haven't hear of a single person that managed to get the email feature working as advertized by D-Link.

I read some reviews, including the one at smallnetbuilder, that guy said the same thing, he never got any emails from the camera, no matter how he set it up.

I have three DCS-942L cameras set up to send e-mails, and I have no problems.  I have cable service and the cable company's SMTP server allows relaying through their server with no username and password, and no SSL.  This is admittedly simpler than what you are trying to do, but I'm just pointing out that the e-mail can work.  The folks who manage to get it to work don't post on forums saying as much :).

Does your ISP offer an SMTP gateway?  You might try that instead of sending through gmail.

Thanks Belvedere!

Yesterday I did exactly what you have suggested now.

It worked! And it continues to work.
I was waiting to be sure enough that the configuration works.

Considering that you too confirm this approach, I could be sure that it will continue to work.

So, as you have written, my configuration is:
Smtp server: my ISP smtp
Username: (blank)
Password: (blank)
Use SSL: none

So simple!  ;)

Good!  A more detailed error message than "Send failed" for the test-email button sure would be helpful, wouldn't it?

Sure, it would!

I'm going to add it to the wish list!

I have the same problem. The DLINK does not send emails, this is a crucial feature I need that should be working.

I get the same error "Send a test mail failure" using my gmail settings.

Note: I have DCS-932L with the same mail settings that works great.

But the DCS-942L does not, I saved settings, rebooted, etc., but no additional information in the log.

Any suggestions on how to get this to work.

Having "spastic" problems similar in nature.  Went on vacation a few weeks ago - all worked fine from 4 camera's for a week.  I had them set up to take a snapshot once per day per camera and send to my email.  Then they all stopped (a few days apart) - now through mydlink I can only access 2 of them  Can send a "test snapshot" from the 2 I can access, and the test picture comes through fine.  One camera did send snapshots for 2 days again, and then stopped.  I have rebooted the router a couple times and ALL cameras have been set to reboot once per day - but nothing seems to fix the problem.  Will be home in a week or so and unplug them to reset and see if that helps.  Sure would like some help getting these cameras to works the way they advertise.  NOTE -  Dlink support advised me to unplug the camera to see if this would fix the problem, if not - do a factory re-set and set them up again... maybe a good plan, but I am several thousand miles from the camera's so that support is pretty useless.

Update - after returning home, checked my NAS and every camera recorded "events" as it should for the entire duration.  I suspect the issue was firmware V1.23. As a solution, I hard wired each camera to the router (one at a time) - did a reset (using the reset on the back of the camera) - did a complete re-install and reverted back to firmware 1.22 - actually went through this process twice with each camera to be sure - all 4 now working 100% for now -

Hi,

Got hold of a 942L today, and had no joy setting up with gmail or hotmail after an firmware upgrade. Performed a firmware upgrade and currently on:
Firmware Version         1.23
Firmware Build Number  3404

I am UK based, and was able to send email using BT's mail server:

SMTP - mail.btinternet.com
Port - 587
Username - <name>@btinternet.com
Use SSL-TLS - No

Made a change seeing: "Send a test mail successfully", and then seeing it being received.

been unable to send emails using gmail and hotmail (like everyone else).... but got it working using the free email account i get from ISP.

don't waste your time trying to get gmail and hotmail working... it's pointless.  the only way to get email notifications is by using a pop3 style email account, like a school or employer email address or an address given to you by your ISP or hosting company.

I'm using DCS-2132LB. I contacted Taiwan support, and got the solution to get gmail smtp works. The issue is D-Link doesn't support secure sign in. So you need to go to gmail 'My Account' security section to "Allow less secure apps: ON". Since the password field also doesn't support non alphabet characters, so you are advised to create a non-secure gmail account just for cctv mailer purpose. Another reason is this account may use up your email quota with vid/pic attachment. Good luck!

As per kope above, I created a non-secure access to a throwaway google account without numbers in the password, used google settings in email page, but use only name and not @gmail.com in the name field. also had to set the security to starttls in order for it to work. only took me a few hours of frustration lol!

Here's what I did:

First I assigned a Static IP address to the camera:
    1. Reserve the IP address currently assigned to the camera on your router;
    2. Access the camera interface by entering the same IP address into your browser;
    3. Select the Status tab;
    4. Note the IPv4 settings (Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS, etc);
    5. Go to Setup/Network;
    6. Select Static IP Address, and
    7. Enter the same settings that were noted above into the appropriate cells (don't save yet).
Now change the HTTP Port in case your ISP doesn't enable port 80:
    8. Scroll down to the port settings:
       a. Change the HTTP Port to 801,
       b. Enable UPNP Port Forwarding,
       c. Change the UPNP External HTTP Port Forward to 801,
       d. Leave the other two ports (HTTPS, RTSP) the same;
    9. Save the camera settings and let the camera reboot.

While the camera reboots, log into your router again and forward ports 801, 443 and 554 to your camera's Static IP address (I activated both UPD and TCP protocols, which might be overkill, but I wasn't taking any chances).

Log back into the camera using the Static IP Address and new port (192.164.0.14:801), make sure your email settings are correct and run a test.

It worked like a charm for me, and I'm up and running now!

Depending on configuration and router MFr, Static IP addresses should NOT be reserved ON the router at the same time. Static IP addresses should be set on devices out side of the routers DHCP IP address pool. Otherwise using a Reserved IP address for devices ON the router with in the DHCP IP address pool is a good method. Setting a Static and reserving at the same time is not good networking practice and may cause problems.
>DHCP (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58017.0)

It's recommended that in this case, cameras, should have a static IP address set on them.

Here's what I did:

First I assigned a Static IP address to the camera:
    1. Reserve the IP address currently assigned to the camera on your router;
    2. Access the camera interface by entering the same IP address into your browser;
    3. Select the Status tab;

    5. Go to Setup/Network;
    6. Select Static IP Address, and

Now change the HTTP Port in case your ISP doesn't enable port 80:
    8. Scroll down to the port settings:

       b. Enable UPNP Port Forwarding,
       c. Change the UPNP External HTTP Port Forward to 801,
       d. Leave the other two ports (HTTPS, RTSP) the same;
    9. Save the camera settings and let the camera reboot.

While the camera reboots, log into your router again and forward ports 801, 443 and 554 to your camera's Static IP address (I activated both UPD and TCP protocols, which might be overkill, but I wasn't taking any chances).

Hi all,

My DCS-942L stopped sending emails using my Gmail SMTP settings after getting a new router even after configuring the new router to look like the old one on the LAN. I'd just like to note that I had to specify the IP of my new router within the camera primary DNS settings to get the camera to send emails again. Something which I did not have to define with my old router.

I guess the camera could not resolve the smtp.gmail.com hostname but the lovely lack of error messages when emails failed to send of course helped me to diagnose this ;)

What Mfr and model is the main host router?

I recommend setting a static IP address ON the cameras outside of the main host routers default DHCP IP address pool: 192.168.#.94.  DHCP (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=58017.0)

Test cameras with uPnP and uPnP Port Forwarding both enabled on ALL cameras: DCS Cloud (L) Series Camera Configuration and Mydlink.com (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=62395.0)

All of a sudden my two camera stopped sending emails of snapshots at the same time! Very odd.

 Even a test would not work.

 I'm not a technically talented person. I reset one camera it to factory setting, went thru the painful exercise of reconfiguring the camera. Only one, so I could copy the setting from the other.

My gmail password previously had numbers in it. The password only had 8 digits.

Can anyone tell me if something from DLink has changed, or can help. I use these when I go on vacation and that's happening in a week, thanks in advance for any assistance.

I would try a different email service to see if same thing happens. If you haven't changed anything with the cameras or your networking environment, this could be email service related.

First of all, thanks for the reply. I'm running Firmware 1.27. The router is the same I've been using is from BELL here in Ontario Canada, it's I believe their standard unit they supply to customers, a Sagemcom.

H/W is A4 ver 1.20, does that sound familiar

One thing I have notice when I went in again just a while ago, was the password looked changed from a 8 character to a 10 character. It keeps defaulting to that...........very odd.

I am in Ontario, Canada, the Niagara Region.

I did try a different email also, that is associated with the Bell Internet provider here.

I just find that the two cameras both stopped at the same time being to coincidental.  Thanks for any help, Kelly

I would set up the email services PW again to something new. I know that Gmail had changed there PW requirements to include numbers and 1 special character so you might do a full PW change with gmail, set up 10 characters and ensure requirements are met. Then input this new PW in to each camera and test.

I did change PW change in gmail, and put into both camera's. It was an 8 character PW. 6 alpha 2 num. When I enter them into the camera, the passward shows ********** (10) digits not the 8 new PW I had put in ?????

I even tried a different email client.

What browser are you using?
Try clearing the browser cache, exit the browser then re-open then reconnect to the camera. Try IE11 or FF as well.

Is the new gmail PW 8 or 10 characters? I would use 10 chars for gmail.

The new password is 8 characters. and I am using E11 for the DLink, Chrome seems to not work with this.

Yes, it does. Then after the test, the PW changes to 10 characters on it's on in the PW field

And do you get any notification emails if you force trigger something on the camera?

I'm wondering if the 10 (*) is just a visual place holder to mask actual pw character count.  ???

Now, they charge for support, how convenient is that.
Both cameras going down at the same time, yes, I'm suspicious.

I'll see if I can get some more help and information on this. From just a camera service, emails should be sent and I don't believe it required mydlink.com support service for just emails.

Well, if you have had the cameras for a long time. Warranty and free support is only for a limited time frame.
I see this on the support site for this model camera:
"This product has been discontinued.
Free support for this product will end on 07/01/2018"

Lets see if we can get more help on this.

Greenbay42, I don't seem to have the same mail set up as you show in the link. Here is mine, I'm still trying darn it. I was going to show you, but wont let me cut and paste from my screen shot.

I will be heading to the US in a week, I wonder if they will chat to me once down there instead of here in Canada.

I've tried all the recommendations you both have sent me, it's something either very little, or since one day in January, DLink has made some change to affect the cameras to take snapshots. Both cameras at once is very suspicious, and same day......

Thanks again

You MUST do this first for the "sender" account --> http://support.dlink.com/FAQView.aspx?f=EtsWnye%2f5hsweBlN5IYO0A%3d%3d (http://support.dlink.com/FAQView.aspx?f=EtsWnye%2f5hsweBlN5IYO0A%3d%3d)

Here are my email settings in the camera that worked:

Go to Setup > Snapshot

Checked snapshot. Selected TRIGGER BY = motion

Target: Email

Recipient email = where you want it to go (any email address)
SMTP Mail Server = smtp.gmail.com
Port = 465
Username = your email address WITHOUT the @gmail.com
Password = your gmail password
Sender Email Address = I used same account - include @gmail.com
Send next email = 30 seconds
Use SSL-TLS = SSL-TLS

Click Save Settings.

I waved my hand in front of the camera and received pics of my hand in my gmail account.

Yes, it does. Then after the test, the PW changes to 10 characters on it's on in the PW field

My gmail password is 14 characters but shows 10 in the camera UI. It is just a mask. The password will be what you typed.

You guys are my HERO"S. Awesome, got it to work. I believe the port setting was the culprit?  In previous notes, it showed it to be 587. I believe in two posts prior where you show other account settings. Now i can go away in peace having my camera's working with pics. Again, thanks to all who helped here. You have no idea how illiterate I am to do these and you got me thru it. Have the rest of the day off on me, lol.

So appreciated the help.

After thinking last night, was wondering about port settings. It had previously been working fine on the 587.  who decided that this port was obsolete now, or does someone out there make the switch. This must cause lots of issues like this.

That was a gmail thing. They increased their security and require SSL-TLS which uses port 465.

Ok, my cameras have stopped again, hopefully it's this Port thing again. Presently it uses 465, does Gmail mix things  up once in a while, and how can I figure this out without bugging you guys, thanks Kel03

Might reboot your router and the cameras and try again in say 30 minutes? Let the system maybe give the new settings for Google mail a bit to settle in.

Rebooted modem, no help with this issue. Running on Port 465, both camera's not working so it's something with gmail again I believe, or Google settings.

Is this what your screen looks like?

(http://images.dlink.com/new/articles/snapshot_email.png)

Recipient E-Mail Address -  The email address you want snapshots mailed to. This does not have to be the same account as the rest of the information below.

SMTP Mail Server - smtp.gmail.com

Port - 465

User Name - the username for your gmail account. only the username, not the @gmail.com

Password - The password for this gmail account (case-sensitive).

Sender E-Mail Address - The email address that the recipient will see it coming from. 99% of the time it is the email address that the "user name" is with the @gmail.com.

Send next E-mail after - 30 seconds is default.

Use SSL-TLS - Select SSL-TLS from the drop-down.

CLICK SAVE SETTINGS.

Click Test.

The culprit was the "allow less secure apps" switch in Google. It was previously set to "allow", not sure if Google pushes changes to make these switch off??? Anyhow, once again, thank you all for the support !

Make sure your IP is set to DHCP in Network Settings and not Static IP. The email extension does not recognize a Static IP.
