Title: 868L Initial thoughts...
Post by: slakkr on May 21, 2013, 09:40:25 AM
I've been using it for a few days now and so far it appears like a stable router on its first firmware release, much more stable then Netgear R6300 was when it first came out. I didn't update it to the beta firmware, will wait for the final release. Bandwidth wise and range wise it falls just a bit short from Netgear R6300. Perhaps Dlink will improve it with firmware? Although, 2.4 Ghz band handles a bit better then Netgear R6300 in congested area, I don't have as many dropouts.

I do like the cylindrical design

Thanks for sharing. Hope you enjoy it. I'm enjoying mine. I think the 5Ghz range is better than the 2.4Ghz for some reason. I'm sure they'll improve it.

The 5Ghz radio definitely has a better range from what I've been observing. Perhaps the amplified signal is slanted towards that band.  ???

I've compared it side by side with my Netgear R6300 and unfortunately 868L falls shorts in either bands in terms of bandwidth.
For instance: 25 feet from the router through several walls I can download file from my Synology NAS at speeds 11 MB/Sec with R6300 while 686L shows 5 MB/sec. Signal on my laptop shows 5 bars on both routers, but on R6300 it shows 405 Mbps while 686L shows 130 Mbps. That test was using 5 Ghz band.

Well, 5Ghz is best in line of sight, and is effected by building materials and such. Nature of the 5ghz radio.

I see about 13Mb on the down and 9 on the up on 5Ghz so far..

I can get higher speeds while standing next to router, but that's not the idea. I have to cover 1500 sq feet by relying on one router and while both do the job 868L shows less bandwidth/range at the extreme corners of the house. So it appears that R6300 has better signal penetration through walls.

There are couple of issues that I ran into with 868L

1. VPN connection dies out out after a few minutes of use. Have to disabling/renabling VPN to make it work

2. Nexus 4 phone and a tablet wifi connection dies after a few minutes of use even though it shows strong signal. Have to disable/enable wifi to get it working again.

Anyway, I decided to stick with my aging R6300 a bit longer since there are no advantages in 868L.

Could be any thing at this point. Configuration, ISP services, distances and such. Hear that Mac Filtering helps VPN. I'll check on that.

I don't have the same client HW as you do however my Mac Book Pro and 3 iPhones do well on WiFi. I do think the range on the 2.4Ghz isn't as good has the 5Ghz. Mac Book always connects to the 5ghz right off when in the living room going thru 2 wall. 2200 Sq ft house here.

Good luck with the R6300.

Could be, but I used identical configuration settings as I've been using on R6300. Also, I have 15 wireless devices, but Nexus 4 and a tablet are the only ones that don't like the new router. Oh well...

Do the Nexus and Tablet work on WPA or WPA 2, 20Mhz only and TPIK only as a test setting?

I would not attempt to copy settings between a D-Link router and a NG router. Not the same and configurations could be different and not an accurate set up for any router unless it's the exact same model.

I am using WPA2 20/40 Mhz and AES. The thing is I've used Nexus 4 on many wireless networks and this is the first time I am having issue like that.

Understand, I'm also curious if by changing to the mentioned settings, do the devices work then? We are tracking an issue with some Samsung devices while on DIR series routers. Just trying to collect additional information.

Please sir. I presume that most new and current generation client HW should work well on WPA2 and AES only settings. Just need to see if that will work along with testing WPA/ or 2 and TPIK and 20Mhz.

I'll post some info about it in the main support forum threat...

Thank you sir.

Yes, I have AES and WPA2 only. I shut off anything older then 802.11N. Also turned off coexistence mode.

The only thing I notice was one time it was connected and good signal. I tried to browse the web and no web site would load. I disabled wifi and re enabled it (on my phone), then it started working fine.

What modes and security modes are you currently using? Did you get a chance to test TPIK and 20Mhz only settings?
Title: Re: 868L Initial thoughts...

Tkip only supports lower speeds. I am AES and I am connecting on 5Ghz only. I am using channel 161. I have co-existence off. I am using 20/40/80 auto. Also firmware 1.01 beta. On 5Ghz I disabled anything older then 802.11n.

Nice...
Can you test 2.4Ghz out and see if AES and TPIK exhibit any issues with your Samsung devices? I think the problems are 2.4Ghz related.  :-\

I have tested it with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (At&t Lte model with Dual core Krait) and found no issues with 2.4 band.

Awesome. Well, hopefully the DIR-868 isn't too effected by this issue with WiFi and Samsung devices.

Keep us posted if you notice anything.  ;)

Ok noticed the issue on 5Ghz again. The device appears connected. The speed of the connect was over 300Mbps. I had really good signal strength. I did not have any authentication errors. No web pages would load. I had to disable wifi and re enable it. The phone had been rebooted 2 hours before. This is on the Samsung Galaxy S4. Its done this twice now. It will not connect to any web site, even loading speed test would not connect. I have notice the issues with 5Ghz only. Keep in mind that that this phone has 802.11ac.

My Netgear R6250 would do the exact same thing, except it was 15 times a day. The netgear has this exact same chipset as the D-link 868L. No issues with my router before that one. This is my 2nd S4 with these issues.

Good information.
So 2.4Ghz works well for your Samsung device?

Thank you for posting your findings. I'll make sure D-Link is aware of this.
Title: Re: 868L Initial thoughts...
Post by: madhatter01 on May 29, 2013, 08:20:34 AM
Yes, but keep in mind you are loosing 802.11ac when you move to 2.4Ghz. The issue may be a bug in 802.11ac and by switching 2.4Ghz/802.11n you would not have issues. My Samsung tablet is very close to a Samsung Galaxy S3 in specs. The max it connects is 65Mbps on 802.11n and 2.4Ghz only. I dont know if it truly is a 2.4Ghz or 5.0Ghz problem. It maybe an 802.11ac issue since the S4 is on of the first phones to use it.

Yes we know that AC is only on 5Ghz. Were just making sure that in your testing that both radios are tested and results are seen for both.

Good to know about the S4s being the first to use AC.

Overall, AC is still new and I'm sure there will be bugs to work out.  ::)

I dont think the problem is D-link, I think it is Samsung.

And what are the wireless settings on the router when this occurs? And this is on the Samsung Galaxy? Do any other WiFi devices exhibit the same thing when this happens?

Reading over the blog…  I experienced the same thing. But with 2 of my laptops. Have one MSI, 3-4 years old and almost brand new HP – i7. Almost everything I’m running at home is N 2.4G, except new Apple devices running at 5G. No old stuff.

I have V1.01 now (sorry upgraded almost right away, so not sure about V1.00). But the rest is the same. During last few weeks I got the situation when it chocks over a sudden and while all statuses reporting good healthy connections – I cannot go online. I haven’t tried to enable/disable. Just did reboot and it was OK for a while again.  All happened only while I was using 2.4G WI-FIs. I don’t believe I had seen any issues with 5G or with any wired connections.

I’ll keep eye, but working 2 jobs and don’t have enough time to play with new toy.
Overall – Like it so far, good range, better performance. Got a AC1200 stick, and it is works great. Have also busy network with over 10 devices online almost all the time. My kid has some issues to connect his XBOX online – but I didn’t get involved yet, since he is just refusing to let me troubleshooting ;). Saying wired works and he has no time to play with it. Sounds familiar? anyone?

Any other neighboring WiFi routers near by?

What Mfr and model AC1200 adapter did you get?

I keep it with defaults after upgrading to V1.01, I believe. The only mistake I did and I fixed it since – I changed DHCP IP Address Range to include 100…220, while I have a Synology server at XXX.XXX.XXX.200. Changed it to “100 to 180” about a week ago.
Now I have only 2.4G and 5G On and set to run 802.11n only (20/40Mhz, auto rate and AES).
There are other networks very far away (barely ever see them on the list).
Since I fixed the IP, disable guest account and set everything to 11n only I don’t think I’ve seen any issues as I described in my previous post.

Adapter I have is DLINK DWA-182. But used it only once or twice so far; works OK I believe.
I’ll check the XBOX post and will let you know if that would help.
Thanks.

Well… Not sure If I like what I see so far. While disconnects are went away, range still isn’t very good. 15 ft away through 2 walls (just outside of the house) shows all bars but said "no internet connection" if trying to go online. And I agree that 5G seems to be working better in some cases than 2.4G, but... still weak.
Now – about the stick –
1.   Installation. I had tried it with my old MSI with Win 7 and new HP i7 with Win8. MSI installed it well and got all connected and sort of happy. Win 8 was a mess – while after some delays and doing something for a while installation was completed, but told me that cannot run management routine and I need to run it myself.  It worked after I manually got it connected, but didn’t like to detect the stick after I reboot the system. Going to device manager showed yellow exclamation mark near stick’s name. Enabling/disableling didn’t make any difference. Had to uninstall it and install it again. Worked again….
2.   Now – the speed… haven’t seen wireless speed reported anything higher than 173 for HP i7 and 144 on older MSI.
3.   Transferring rate (tested transferring single 2.443G ISO file to/from my Synology server connected via 1G network ) –  all in MB/s:
                                  868L-stick (5G)        868L-stick (2.4G)       868L-Build-in N adapter (2.4G)
MSI-to-server                    10.4                          7.8                                           5.52
Server-to-MSI                    8                              10.2                                         7.18
HPi7-to-server                   11..15                        10.6                                         6.65

MSI was on the table about 2..2.5Ft away (the same room).
HPi7 was about 6 feet away with a wall in-between.

Also experienced again (I think it is all the same nature with previously described problems of when have a full connection to the router and no or very limited internet connection).
2 times during last few days left computer idle for a while (one case overnight and over 5 hours for another case) and when came back I still had connection to the router, but speed - according to speed test - IT was 0.8.....2, while normally I got close to 60.  ... reboot the ROUTER only fixed it...

I recommend testing a minimum of 4-5 feet away from the router.

Ok I swapped out my Dir-868L. Newegg had a deal where you got a free DWA-182, but they made me reorder and send mine back. Strange, but worth a free DWA-182. No restocking fee either. I went and swapped it out since the new one I received had a way newer serial number.

I'm using V1.01 now. Updated almost right after I got mine.

What version of FW is currently loaded for this test? Shipping?
I recommend testing a minimum of 4-5 feet away from the router.

I have "MIXED 11AC and 11N" for 5G settings. CH 165, "Best" for TX rate and 20MHz CH width.

What wireless protocol (N or AC) did you use while performing your 5 GHz band testing?

More specifically, what protocol did you actually test? Was your wireless card connected to the DIR-868L using "AC" or "N" during your testing? The throughput of N vs. AC should be very different from one another.  Also, did you validate the protocol you were connected to on the DIR-868L status page, to ensure you were consistently connected using the same protocol (e.g. validate connection to "AC" during all testing)?

Can you test Auto 20/40/80Mhz?
I think by using 20Mhz only, you limited the connection rates and performance.

By setting it at 20Mhz only you literally cut your speeds in half.

So some reason I had auto scan “OFF” and “channel” selected to 165. With this selection 20MHz is the only option available (grayed out). I’ll try to run few tests tonight.

Please run a test with Mixed Mode settings and Scan set to automatic. The Channel Width should be selectable and available to use and you should see the other Mhz listed.
Let us know know you don't or can't use the Channel Width feature.

Changed it to Auto. Get higher speed.
I was able to run only few testes last night on my MSI laptop.  After driver crashed number of time not very comfortable to use the same driver on Win8 machine.
So – yes it is consistently reporting that connection made as 11AC. 100% signal strength.  The best results I got are 24 from laptop to the server, and 17.2 from server to laptop. And even with good strength – very inconsistent. Even with 11AC all the time… seen 11.. 13 thought the hole transfer, also in some cases dropping to only 2. The stick utility reposted a bit over 700 Mbps during the best transfer. Around 300…370 most of the times.

Any chance you can test a Windows 7 PC?

All I was talking about is my MSI laptop with WIN7 64-bit. Had issues with  stick drivers on Win 8.

so - Are they are any Win 8 drivers for USB stick ... while driver sort of works every once in a while, it is completely confused about manager. ..
and  - If the speed I got is something reasonable or you would expect to see something different?

I presume that Win 8 drivers are in the works and are being worked on. I presume they are working on it. I have seen crashing on my OSX 10.8 Laptop and have reported it. Drivers work on OSX 10.7.  :-\

The speeds you are seeing now that you tested with Auto 20/40/80Mhz are very good. What are the connection speeds being reporting by Windows Status and on the routers wireless status page?
