Greetings.

I have a D-Link DIR-600 router (Hardware Version: Bx; Firmware Version: 2.18; using the same ISP and settings as previously described).  I have the router's DNS Relay feature enabled, and have noticed that DNS requests occasionally time out.  (This is particularly noticeable in my RSS aggregator, which polls about a hundred websites a day.  Inevitably two or three of the connections will fail due to a DNS timeout.)  If I tell me computer to use the Google Public DNS at 8.8.8.8, then everything works fine; no timeouts.

This problem seems to have been reported by at least one other DIR-600 users (see Andre Faca's review).

I'm wondering if the problem is with my router's DNS relay, or if it's the upstream DNS server that's timing out.  Is there any way for me to check?

What happens if you disable DNS Relay? And either input custom DNS addresses into the router or let the router auto detect ISP DNS.

If I disable the DNS relay, doesn't this mean that I'll have to manually configure the DNS IP in all my machines?  Or am I misunderstanding the purpose of this option?

Shouldn't, the router should auto detect DNS IP addresses or you can input custom DNS and it should pass thru to all devices. I don't have this model router however all my D-Link routers do this when DNS relay is disabled.

OK, I've been running several days with the DNS relay disabled, and my machines haven't had any more DNS timeouts.  I guess this points to the problem being the router itself as opposed to the upstream DNS servers.  Short of leaving the relay disabled, is there anything I can do to further diagnose or fix the problem?

Not sure if there is anything else. Something tells me there is a problem with the FW your using on the 600 and with DNS relay. You might try a test with a new generation DIR series router and see if the same thing happens. If not, then something with the FW on the 600 needs to be looked at. If it happens on the newer generation router, then possible something with your ISP modem or service that's causing problems.
