Title: router end of life?
Post by: namsilat on April 01, 2013, 03:06:56 PM
Sometime earlier today my DIR-628 router just stopped working. The power button and all four port lights were constantly blinking in sync. I tried several methods to see it can be recycled, reset button, plugging-unplugging power, etc., but none worked. I left it unplugged from power for about 1/2 hr, and gave it one more try by plugging in the power, but now it's not even powering on anymore. The firmware version was 1.25. I think the router is gone, but I would appreciate confirmation on this.

Only other thing to check would be the power voltages coming out of the power adapter plug. I believe that it should be 12v 2A. If you aren't seeing that then you have a bad Power adapter. If you are getting that, then probably the router has gone bad possibly. Ensure you try a different power wall outlet with out any power strips for testing too.

For a few minutes there, the lights returned to normal on the router, but only for a few minutes. They are now back to flashing. I discovered something interesting as I examined the power supply adapter, part of the plastic exterior is broken and exposed. I am not sure if that could be responsible for the state the router is in. Is there a way to order a replacement power adapter? Pending on the cost involved, I wonder if it may be easier just to buy a new router.

I would recommend that you contact D-Link support and see if you can get a replacement, however since you mentioned that there is damage on the plug, there could have been some bad connections that could have damaged the router. You could ask D-Link support for an RMA. This router has been phased out so I'm not sure if they'll even RMA it. They might. Won't know until you call.

On the other hand, if you want to bail on the 628, and if your in the NA region, You could get you one of these great routers:

This is very similar and I believe is the same internal HW has the 628 as the FW and features are similar in nature.

I have 3 of these routers and IMO, was one of the greatest routers made. Sorry to see it phased out as well, however they are doing a follow on:

Not sure what your price point is on getting a new router. There are other routers out there that work just as well and has better features too.

Let us know what your price point is and what your networking needs are, WiFi, any gaming? Specific applications or needs. Maybe we can recommend something different.

I managed to get my hands on a power supply and the router is now up and running :]

However, Wifi is not working, and I made a post in another thread about it.
