Title: Should I buy the COVR-3902 or ?
Post by: 02ebz06 on August 06, 2017, 10:15:27 AM
I have a DIR-800L I'm looking to replace.
I use it behind my ISP's Router (CenturyLink) .
Coverage is not the best at 5GHZ even with an extender.
I run gigabit LAN thru the house for servers and PC's and wireless for PC's, Laptops, an A/V Processor, ROKU's, 4k TV, etc.
The Servers host all my movies and the ROKU's stream them to the TV's.
Just Blu-Ray movies at present, but when I find a 4k Player for a PC, I will be able to put the 4k movies on the Servers.
I was looking at the DIR-895L/R (AC5300) and then saw the COVR-3902.
When I went to shop.us.dlink.com the DIR-895L/R isn't listed.
That has me thinking it is an old device, even though you can find them for sale elsewhere.

So...
Is the COVR-3092 newer and better than the DIR-895L?
Would the COVR-3902 be the best choice for my environment and use?

TIA

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48135.0)

Well the specs are:
Wi-Fi Data Rate
• 2.4 GHz Band: up to 800 Mbps
• 5 GHz Band: up to 1,733 Mbps

To take full advantage of this you would need a wireless device to connect at 1300 or 1733mb to get full connection rates on 5Ghz and I presume with compressed 4K, smooth video might be achieved. 1080p should be smooth as well...

I don't have 4K support for anything at the moment. I know that raw 4K is very bandwidth intensive and not sure if any router can handle raw 4K. Raw 4K runs in the 10Gb bandwidth range and to even steam it smoothly, you would probably need a 10Gb LAN wired supporting network system.

I tested 1080p raw BD files years ago with DIR series AC calls routers and bridges. Even with the best configuration and settings and connection rates at 1300Mb, my boxee box would buffer occasionally with it's 100Mb LAN port connected to a 1300Mb wireless bridge. The higher bandwidth the raw BD file was, the worse the buffering was. I presume that there was some bandwidth issues in processing the raw data from AP to bridge and to the boxee. When I connected by boxee box to wired Gb switch, I get zero buffering of raw 1080p BD files. So after all that I kept the boxee hard wired always. Wireless can't compete with Gb LAN connections.  ::)

Given that, I presume that maybe the COVR system will work, however I don't know for sure. Kind of depends on your source video data and device support on how they process the 4K data and such.

The COVR is supposed to have MIMO which maybe beneficial as well to streaming. I guess also client devices need to really support MIMO as well to take full advantage of it.

Only thing I would suggest is to find a local shop that has them or Amazon which have a good refund policy and test it out. If it's not working as you feel, then you can return it.

The 895L is about 1.5 years old, kind new and FW is still under development. I believe that has 3 radios like the 890L does.
Wi-Fi speeds of up to 5332Mpbs (1000Mbps + 2166Mbps + 2166Mbps)
The DIR-89x series was supposed to support MIMO however I believe there were problems in the wifi chip set.

Thanks for the reply.

I have no issues with Blu-Ray movies over 2.4GHZ.
I can see where 4k could be an issue.
A Blu-Ray movie takes up 25-30GB on the server.
I could see a 4k movie taking up twice that, so pushing twice as many 1's and 0's in same time-frame would tax the network.

There is no doubt wired is better than Wireless.
Unfortunately the original owner of this house did not run Cat-5 to all rooms.
What was run was configured for phone,
So some re-configuring, I got a couple LAN lines and was able to add a couple more on second floor where my servers are.
Unfortunately my main viewing room is on first floor and no way to get a Cat-5 to it.

If the DIR-895L is still a current item, seems strange it doesn't show in the D-Link store.
The 890L is there.

Didn't mention, but I like to buy new, i.e. a product that has only been out less than 6 months, and appears the COVR-3902 fits that category.
For the most part, with ever changing technology, 2 years is outdated tech, and 5 years is antique.

Thanks for the tip about checking locally.
I have a Best Buy not too far, but haven't looked to see if they sell them.

I don't think not being available in the Dlink Store is any indication of it being a current item.  Other retailers have it.

If you click on buy now - it says out of stock.

Looks like they have some other products that are 'new'.

Ahh, that explains why it doesn't show in store.

Just curious if your BD files are raw or compressed any?

Ya, the 895L is still current. And just out of stock.

Ya, I understand that some preexisting homes don't come with LAN cables. It can be added, just take some fishing tools and work. I added CAT6A to my new addition to proofing for 10Gb support when and if that comes to the consumer market.  ::) ::)

Wow, well I can understand keeping up with technology however nothing wrong in older tech not working either. I think your 2 and 5 years is a bit extreme. But thats me. I'm still using DGL-4500 thats about 10 years old. Have my DIR-890L set up as main AP with the 4500. Theres good stuff that does work well and beyond some users expectations. I have a couple of 1300mb bridges that are 5 years old and work just fine. I guess you maybe an early adopter kinda person. LOL. Thats kewl. If so, you should be using CAT6 for all your LAN cabling. I migrated about 8 years ago. All CAT6A  in wall and CAT6 patch cables for everything.

See about the 895L and see how you like it. I need to do some streaming testing with my 890L and bridged I have. Been doing some game console testing and trying to figure all that out.  ::)

Just curious if your BD files are raw or compressed any?     Raw I believe.  I use MakeMKV program to copy them off the discs.

Hard to do when joists run east and west and you need to go north and south with the cable on first floor of 2-story house.   Yup, that's me, Early Adopter (in most cases) for computer stuff. Wouldn't do that when I was in working in IT though (retired now).

See about the 895L and see how you like it. I need to do some streaming testing with my 890L and bridged I have. Been doing some game console testing and trying to figure all that out.  ::)

You may want to contact pre-sales/customer service and asked about which router you should get. The COVR system works well from what I've seen but I know there are certain options you cannot configure (cannot turn off smart connect or set different wireless network names/passwords for each band or extender). Also the DIR-878 and DIR-882 are D-Link's newest routers so look into those. All have similar features and same UI as the 885/890/895 routers.

And the new routers are supposed to be MIMO as well. Not sure what happened to the 89x and MIMO.  ::)

Good old Papst Blue Ribbon.  I wasn't old enough to drink it when we lived there, but have had it.
My father worked for the railroad so he got around all the breweries and at Christmas time they always gave out cases of beer.
I think at one time we had 15 cases in our basement.

Back on topic, My ROKU's all support MIMO so I'm thinking the COVR-3902 looks like a better choice than the 895L in that respect.
Also looks like a better performer than the 878L or  or 882L

And... Amazon can set it up for me for only $95.79.  ;D

No problem. Let us know how you like the COVR. It is pretty easy to set up with the dlink wi-fi app. Make sure you set up the extender in the same room as the router during setup. Makes it easier. Some people like to place the extender far away and during setup it may not find it. Once configured you can move it closer to your dead areas.

On the support site there are FAQs on installation. http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=COVR-3902-US (http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=COVR-3902-US)

Thanks, I think that was in the manual about having the extender close during initial setup. Already have it downloaded.

Well, it is installed and running great. The Setup Wizard has always been easy on D-Link products.
When configuring all my devices to point to it, all showed Excellent strength except two on second floor which showed good.
I'm OK with that.
As for performance, I didn't do any baseline on the DIR-800 this replaces so have no way to compare, but performance is very good.

I don't think I missed anything when configuring it, but  I have a few irritations:
1)  Idle timeout is too short and I see no way to change that.  That was on DIR-800 as well.
These units are for home use. Pretty sure if I walk away from my PC for an hour nobody is going to sneak in and access it.  ;D

2) When I go to edit a client, the Edit Rule popup won't let me change the name, it's grayed out.
Even the manual shows the name grayed out.
I have 5 that say ROKU. Would be nice to add room name to it.

3) On the Home Page, it says I have two, and some times three extenders.
When I click on it, it displays the Extender and sometimes a PC, sometimes a ROKU, sometimes both.
The PC is hardwired to the Extender,
Sometimes thinks they are clients and sometimes Extenders.
That seems to me to be a bug in the S/W.

4) Initially it found the names of my two Servers and Two PC's. Now the PC that is hardwired to the Extender shows as "unknown"

5) Fairly often the S/W will put a red X on the connection between the Router and the Internet and a red box that says "Click to repair".
Sometimes it turns back green, sometimes it doesn't
Manual says clicking the "Click to repair" button will take you to the Setup Wizard. It does not do that, it puts you at the login screen. Once you log in connection is OK.
I'm 99% certain it is not losing connection as the DIR-800 did not do this and I have no problems when accessing the Internet.

6) Sometimes Connected Clients count drops to 0 or 1.  If you click on the Connected Clients, the previous # of clients are there.

Now none of these issues seem to affect operation of the device and are just frustrating, but this web interface has been around for quite a while and
one would think it should be stable, unless however I'm experiencing problems due to F/W being 1.00, or I missed something in the fine print.
Probably would have waited buying had I know F/W was 1.00.
Hopefully updates are on the horizon.

App wish list:
Be able to see what network it connected a device too.

ALL D-Link routers have a timeout function. I believe it used to be 3 minutes. Not sure if that changed. Anyways, this is something that can't be changed. Ya, would be nice to have a log out button. Most other router Mfrs offer this.  ::)

2) When I go to edit a client, the Edit Rule popup won't let me change the name, it's grayed out.
Even the manual shows the name grayed out.

I presume it should be editable. What browser are you using? Does IE11 or FF do same thing?

4) Initially it found the names of my two Servers and Two PC's. Now the PC that is hardwired to the Extender shows as "unknown"
Be sure that each device has a host name entered in to them. Most PCs and devices you can edit the Host Name.

Maybe an issue in FW. Seen this before on the 890L and 880L in older FW.

1. I have been yelling about this for a while. It is a security thing unfortunately.

Is the ISP modem running bridge mode?

It has a built in router already:
https://www.actiontec.com/products/wifi-routers-gateways/vdsl/c1900a/ (https://www.actiontec.com/products/wifi-routers-gateways/vdsl/c1900a/)

If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) and How NAT Works (http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm). Call the ISP and ask to see if the ISP modem can be bridged. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Networking-101-The-DMZ-137550).

Yes, it is in Bridge mode.  I couldn't set up the DIR-800 behind it any other way.

3)  Didn't see any config option in the ROKU for enable/disable Broadcast.
Unplugged all ROKU's and rebooted COVR and the Extender.
Extender showed up as a client, now back to being an Extender.
Still shows Extenders 2 on home page.
I figured out what that is all about.
The number is for Extenders AND clients connected to the Extender.  Misleading saying "Extenders"
Maybe the bubble should say "Extenders and Connected Clients".
Was more confusing because the Extender itself is listed under "Extenders Connected Clients"
I guess I was thinking Connected Extenders when I saw "Connected Clients"
So it makes sense now that you see which clients are connected to the router and which are connected to the Extender.
192.168.0.121 is the Extender.  The unknown is the PC named Butterfly.

Four of the 5 ROKU's still show up.
That is another irritation.  Don't see any way to remove a device.

I presume you are using the PPPoE connection? If so, only other thing to check is Enable Always.
If the router seems to drop connection here and there, there maybe some FW issues between it and the DSL modem.

Yes, disable Broadcast for ALL ROKUs.

"
Address Mode is Dynamic IP
MTU is Auto

Yes, disable Broadcast for ALL ROKUs.  Don't see any configuration setting for that on the ROKU's,  I can look farther but don't think there is anything

What mode are you using on the router? PPPoE or Dynamic?

Only other test you could try to see if the router seems to drop connections or exhibit this connection issue, would be to put the ISP modem back in router mode, then use the modems DMZ for the 3902 router and see if the symptoms continue.

Home page says Connection Type:  Dynamic IP (PPPOE)
Under Internet Settings, My Internet Connection is: PPPOE
Under Advanced Mode, Address Mode: Dynamic IP

I think I would have to do a factory reset to make changes to the CenturyLink box.
Once it went into bridge mode, I can't connect with GUI or even get a response from a Ping.

Yes, thats normal for bridged mode modems, you have to reset back to factory to gain access to UI.  ::)
