DGL-4500 Very unlikely to one day get Open Source firmware
« on: June 22, 2014, 12:03:10 PM »

I decided today to ask over at OpenWrt forums if there was any hope for the 4500, and I guess not: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=51237

Ubicom CPU, 16MB RAM. Very unlikely to ever get Openwrt support.

For those that don't know what I'm talking about; basically there's been a growing number of open source router firmware projects that aim to replace stock firmware on some routers- thus fixing issues and enabling more features: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wireless_router_firmware_projects

I thought I'd just leave this here for anyone else hanging onto a 4500 and wondering if there's any possible hope to increase its lifespan on a software level. So I guess it's time to move on. I know when getting a new router though that I'm going to looking for one that will have decent OpenWrt support. Or maybe even build my own.

There was never any GPL code developed for this model router by D-Link so 3rd party FW projects never took up the code for it due to the HW design and HW used.

This model router unforunately has entered into Phased Out status with D-Link support and development so no other FW will be provided unless there is a critical security issue found which most have already been addressed.

Over all this model router is still a good solid router to use and works well.

Good Luck.

I was just kind of hoping there'd be something, cause I do still like this router (never see too many with a screen still). The 4500 has no Guest wireless feature though, so I can't do the whole https://openwireless.org/ thing. Otherwise I'd probably still keep it as my main router. Maybe I'll just make the 4500 as a openwireless dedicated router  ;)

But also, unrelated, but nice pics of the insides you did here: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=57300.0

Ya GZ wasn't a feature on the DGL series, not even on the new 5500.

You could always add on a wireless DAP model to the 4500 and put that in the DMZ for use by guests as a alternative solution.

Thanks.

Thanks for posting. Maybe for someone who really wants to see if the can get 3rd party FW on the 4500. From the beginning, any Unicom chipset was not GPL so any router that had that chip set wasn't open to 3rd party FW like Broadcom based chip sets were and still are.
Thus the DGL series and some DIR series like the DIR-655 Rev A and B were Ubicom based. Thus no 3rd party FW support to extend life.

Also by todays standards, wifi has moved from 300Mb N on 5Ghz to beyond that. Streamers and gamers and having multiple devices on one network needs more wifi power and CPU bandwidth now days. Also ISP speeds have moved beyond what some of the older routers never supported. 150-200Mb is about the max older routers seem to support. Last time I had my 4500 or 655 online was a couple of years ago with a 100/3 ISP speed and the upload was over the 2mb limit these older routers supported. It worked for what I had. Supporting of 300Mb to 1Gb is probably not possible as HW acceleration support is needed for the newer higher ISP speeds being seen now days. Something that the older routers just don't have.

Thanks for the links. Some of those are 7 years old.  ::) I tested both v1.1x and v1.2x FW. Never really had issues with either version. I also have Rev A1 and A2 models. Both worked well for me for the time.

Also there is current FW security upgrades that router mfrs and we have to take into account as well. Comes a point where all things need to graduate and move on.

The 4500 was a great router for it's time. Had great gaming experiences with it. It was referred to my be a friend on xbox live I had met back then. Was a great recommendation for sure. I do miss them. Wish current DIR series as more like the 4500 in UI and operations. Some features I miss from the old days.
