Shut off UPnP and applications still works?
« on: February 04, 2014, 01:11:22 PM »

I'm a bit confused. If I have shut down uPnP via unchecking "Enable UPnP" as well as in applications like Skype, Bittorrent etc, and given those applications "fake ports" that are not opened up in "Port forwarding", why do the application still work and connect to the internet as usual. How do they come around it?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

I believe that some applications are not uPnP dependent and may rely upon other means to get thru with the help of the router, being uPnP being OFF or ON. Most HW devices have more uPnP dependencies, like game consoles, printers, things like that.

Hi there,
Stockholm, Sweden
DIR-655 rev A running on 1.37NA,  2013/06/06

Some minor features seems not to work in for example Bittorrent but in general it works as it "should", that is; as if I had done nothing to try to prevent/control it to come in and out through the router.

Does that mean that my router is "open" anyway and I cannot do anything about it?

For one your running the wrong region FW on your EU region router. There are some differences between region FW.
I recommend that you download from there the EU region version:
http://www.dlink.com/se/sv/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router?revision=deu_reva

Use the FW Update Process to make sure the FW is applied correctly and cleanly.

The router is working probably as it should when working with uPnP disabled or enabled and is safe.

Is SPI enabled?

I know that I'm running a NA-version but that was how I got it to work "back in the old days", the EU version did not. After that I've done one or two upgrades, all with the NA-version and it has worked perfect. The NA-forum seems to be a bit more active and hence I can find more help and info here.

SPI is enabled.

Ya maybe there is something wrong with the EU version however not sure what differences could be regarding uPnP and how the router behaves. Especially with different region FW loaded. There maybe differences.

The forums always recommend running correct region FW so that if needed, D-Link official support and forum users can correctly troubleshoot issues like this. Having wrong region FW could make trouble shooting a hassle and lead to false negatives.

I would contact the Mfr of those applications and see what there official word is on uPnP and those applications, see if uPnP is supported by them or is not needed.

Do you by this say that the router doesn't behave as it should in terms of the said settings and how the applications work? If so I will change the FW but otherwise I wont change. Don't fix something that ain't broke. I think I've seen that in "some" of your postings over the years ;)

Yes I post that however that when users are using the correct region FW and is loaded correctly.

Yes, if your using a different or incorrect FW this can cause issues or problems and could allow for incorrect behavior between the router, devices and applications.

Again, I'd load the EU version and also get a hold of the application Mfr and see what they support.

I'll do the test. I may take some time since there are some other priorities right now but I'll for sure do it as well as report back!

Hi there,
Now I tried to update my A4 router from 1.37NA to 1.37EU (DIR655A4_FW137EU.bin) according to "Firmware updates and DLink routers" didn't work at all, 1.37NA is still there. After a minute or so I get a page cannot be reached error with the url pointing at 192.168.0.1/upload.cgi or something likewise.

Then tried "Emergency Flashing HOW-TO", gives the same result except until I got the error message:
"The uploaded firmware file may not be correct. You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for this device, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.
If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that the device may be too busy to properly receive it right now. In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that you are logged in as a 'user' instead of an 'admin' - only administrators can upload new firmware. The Gateway will not be reprogrammed."

Re-downloaded the file and tried again a couple of times until I got the same error message.

Could be mentioned that
- I do not have an amber power light, it's blue, and it's never blinking. Only the other lamps...
- I never got to the "D-Link Router Recovery Mode"
- Only my pc was connected to the router, via one of the ports on its backside.

I also noticed that I have a button on the right side of the router that's not in the manual. Looks like a reset button. But when I tried it, it only started to blink. Nothing else as far as I could see...

Any ideas?
