Author Topic: Wireless desktop works after brining a laptop close? Is this “beaming” in action  (Read 5412 times)

What exactly does the DIR-645 “beaming” do?

Now I’m not sure if this phenomenon is just a coincidence, but I just installed an adapter on a desktop. If it matters, it’s this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833180079&nm_mc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel&cm_mmc=TEMC-RMA-Approvel-_-Content-_-text-_-

I tried to connect and it didn’t work.  It found the SSID and all, but when I gave it a password it said it couldn’t connect and “Windows” diagnosed it as it can’t communicate with router so try to reset router, etc.  I didn’t believe that so I took an N laptop and started walking toward my desktop doing speedtest.net along the way.  It started getting slower as I moved, from 25 Mbps (ISP plan) to like 2 Mbps.  So I figured…ok so this N stuff doesn’t penetrate walls (3 floors to basement), etc. but as I got to the desktop, all of the sudden the laptop shows like 15 Mbps.  Then I was able to connect with the desktop  and it read like 20 Mbps.

If your trying to get thru 3 floors, building materials and such will impact any wifi router trying to go thru that many floors. WiFi routers are designed to work on one or maybe 2 floors depending distances and materials. If your needing coverage down 3 floors then you'll need to probably get a hold of a repeater or extender devices to help with this.

I have a similar issue too, but I am way closer than you. I set up my Dir-645 on the 2nd floor and connect my laptop on the ground floor, I have a small house around 1700 ft and the distance between the router and laptop is within 60-70 ft. The signal strength is great within the same floor but when I move to the ground floor, it started to get much slower, almost the same as my old DIR-655.

I am guessing I set it up wrong, so please let me know if it is a software problem so I can fix it too?

Thanks!!

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

Depending on the placement of the router in the house, floors and building materials will have a interference and impact on performance, it's always recommended to have the router central in relation to the entire house and if distance is an factor, possible use of another AP device would be needed and recommended on different floors.

Are you saying that it's better to connect at G sometimes...and the router wil automatically downgrade the mode from N to G for those clients that have weak N signals?

Also, what does the security have to do with it?  That just encrypts the data, right?  Is one form of encryption so much faster than the other that it makes a notable difference?

If you used a mix, depending on the range, device support and signal, either the router or the device will connect at the best mode and speed. If you use single modes then ya, you'll always get connected at that mode and speed.

Theres been some information about AES having better performance over TPIK.

Also in regards to mode, if you have newer devices that support N, then why broadcast modes that you don't really need. I'm not sure if the new generation routers have B modes however most devices even though they can use B modes, are mainly using G or N modes now days. Turning off B mode helps the router as it doesn't have to manage this mode any more and and out put a better signal when using Mixed G and N or Single mode G or N.
