WAN dropping
« on: April 15, 2020, 06:54:43 AM »

Hello all,

I purchased this router back in early January, and I must say its been frustrating to say the least. About once a week, the WAN connection will drop, where it shows the modem IS connected but has no available internet connection. This usually doesn't correct itself, and it requires a reboot. Not once has a reboot fixed this issue. Once it is rebooted and no connection is available, I go into the advanced network settings, and change the WAN port speed to 10 Mbps. Once I do this, the router shows it now has an internet connection. Once that's done, I set it back to AUTO, and the connection remains up. Rinse and repeat weekly. That USUALLY works, however, there have been a few times where the only thing that works is leaving it for an hour, and it magically works.

I too suffer from the ConnectToServer failure which fills the syslogs daily.

I have tried several factory resets, its upgraded to the latest available firmware version (1.02 in Canada). As for the modem, it is a TP Link TC7650. I've ruled this out as the issue as I have directly connected a laptop, Raspberry Pi, and an nVidia Shield to the modem with various cat cables, and the modem has an active connection while the DIR-3040 fails to find one.

While writing this post, this came up on my syslog server for the router:

Link>Welcome!

What happens if you set the WAN port speed to 100 or 1000 and not Auto?

  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Yes, factory resets before and after the firmware update. As for the wan port speed, it doesn't really matter what I set it to, I've had it drop both at 1000 and 100.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. Ask about an RMA.

Contact D-Link Canada so they can submit a ticket to the engineers. There was an issue with another router that conflicted with an ISP so possibly it is some quirk that the router has with either the modem or ISP.

You've setup a syslog server so this is likely all stuff you've already thought of but in case:

ISP Equipment (Modem)

Was there a special set of steps required to place the equipment into "modem-only" (bridge) mode?  Some ISP devices require Wi-Fi & DHCP be disabled and the LAN cable connected to the first/last port.  One device I had required that it be the last device I turn on in order for it to enter bridge mode.

If you can connect to the ISP device directly and gain access to its config, review all of the settings on the off-chance there's a parameter that requires adjustment.

Cabling

Assuming you're using a CAT-5e 568B LAN cable; if you have a tester handy, check the pinout to ensure it's functioning as expected.  Nothing more irritating than finding out that a LAN cable is faulty.

DIR-3040

Had a quick look through the log and noticed that there's a lot of firmware related entries.  If you performed an in-device firmware update (FOTA), try downloading the firmware and apply it via upload; factory reset afterwards - I'm assuming that's what you likely did but it looks like a hiccup may have occurred during the flash cycle.

You should be able to keep it at AUTO and the DIR NIC should auto-negotiate at full rate; that said, I gather you've already tried forcing 1Gbp/s FDX.

Before manually (don't reload a backed-up config) reconfiguring your settings on the router again, run through your standard connectivity test - i.e. modem <-> dir <-> laptop direct connect (no other devices).

Test power cycling as well as restarting and see what happens.  If it seems like expected behaviour, gradually introduce your changes in the hopes that you can pin-point root cause ... it will likely mean power/restarting cycling between each change to determine what's going on.

All seems to point to a bad flash or ISP equipment incompatibility.

Cheers.
