Incremental Backup Issue
« on: November 12, 2008, 07:25:03 AM »

My DNS343 is running firmware v1.02.

I created a scheduled incremental backup (locally) from Volume_1 to Volume_2 and each time the scheduled event runs, a full backup occurs.  Opening the scheduled event shows that the "incremental backup" option is checked.  I tried creating new scheduled events but, a full backup still occurs each time.

Here are my source/destination settings:

URL          \\192.168.1.3\Volume_1\test\
SAVE TO:  Volume_2/

The first time the above schedule runs, a full backup occurs since the data doesn't exist in the destination.  The second run of this schedule (and each subsequent run) a full backup still occurs despite the fact that the "incremental backup" option is selected (and saved).

Please help.

How are you determining it is doing a full backup?

How are you determining it is doing a full backup?

The source drive contains 800 GB of data.  The initial backup from Vol1 to Vol2 took the better part of a day to complete.   I added one file (700 MB) to Vol1 and started an incremental backup.  The incremental backup took the same time to complete as the initial full backup (almost a full day).  Excluding the initial scan for changes, the delta between Vol1 and Vol2 should have taken < 5 minutes to copy.

During the incremental backup, I opened Vol2 in a window and observed each pre-existing backup file being sequentially rewritten in the same location (although the file hadn't changed).  Upon completion of each re-write, the modification date/time changed to the current date/time.

I've tried this many times with the same result.

Is anyone else experiencing issues with the incremental backup?  I need some validation that this isn't limited to my unit.

I figured I'd wait a month to see if anyone responded to this issue I'm experiencing. . . apparently the wait was futile.  Does anyone from D-Link respond in these forums?  I suppose I'm spoiled by the timely response (usually only minutes or an hour at most) I always receive from the community on the Netgear forums for product/software issues.  Apparently that is not the case at D-Link.

I verified that there seems to me an issue as you explain with the incremental back up and forwarded this to be fixed in future firmware.

Is this issue slated to be fixed in the next firmware update?

I am sorry but I don't have this information available to me at this time.

Without a functional incremental backup solution contained within the DNS-343, an external PC is required to perform daily backups between volumes on the DNS-343.  This is what I've been forced to do since purchasing the DNS-343.

This solution defeats one of the purposes of having a NAS in the first place - not to mention the insane bandwidth used to copy data between volumes on the NAS using a PC as a conduit.

We are looking into this issue and it should be resolved in the next firmware release. It seems if you go back and review your rule for backup the incremental backup check box will be unchecked therefor not applied.

That's one of the first things I looked for when the incremental backup wasn't working.  I've done many spot-checks and each time the "incremental backup" box is always checked.  The check box never reverted to an unchecked state upon logging out and back in.

Not to harp on the subject, but will the incremental backup issue be resolved in the forthcoming firmware?  It's not listed in the current list of fixes (I realize the the list is still subject to change).

Again, when I try to perform an incremental backup, the ENTIRE HDD is backed-up, which takes ~14 hours.  Doing this nightly will kill my HDD in no time.

I currently have to leave an external PC on to backup incremental changes from Vol_1 to Vol_2 on the DNS 343.
