Title: PS4 Won't Connect to Wi-Fi and Router Will Not Downgrade Firmware with 1.02 BETA
Post by: MrTriTanium on December 04, 2017, 10:14:42 PM
Hardware: A1
Firmware: 1.02B01 BETA
Region: USA

I installed the 1.02B01 BETA primarily for the KRACK fix. The next day my roommate tells me that he cannot connect his PS4 to Wi-Fi and gets a "weak connection" error code. The router and PS4 are roughly 15 feet apart, and there is one wall between them. My phone, his phone, and his laptop are all able to maintain a strong connection at the same location as the PS4, and throughout our apartment. Smart Connect is off, though it wouldn't matter since the PS4 only has 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi.

We verified the connection settings on the PS4 to be correct, nothing in the router settings has changed or would have caused issues, and I switched Wi-Fi bands to see if interference could be causing the loss in connection. I changed the Power Settings of the router between Low, Medium, and High, and the PS4 connected on the Medium strength for about 5 seconds, and never connected again.

I have reset the router to defaults and that has not fixed the PS4's connection issues. The next thing I tried was downgrading the firmware to 1.01B04 as there were no issues with that firmware. The firmware installation instantly failed even though I used a desktop connected to the router via etherent. I used Firefox v57 64-bit to flash the firmware the first time, and tried Edge v42 in Windows 10 build 17046.1000 (current Fast Ring build as of this post). Edge failed too. Chrome 62 64-bit and Internet Explorer 11 failed too. I tried 1.00B13 and that failed on all browsers too. I even tried renaming 1.01B04 to 1.03B04 to see if the router wouldn't flash firmware of a lesser version, and that failed.

I used a screen recording app to record the firmware flash to catch the error code that quickly flashed before it said "Firmware Upgrade Failed!" The error code said "Device name given is invalid..." I'm not sure how that is the case when the firmware is downloaded directly from D-Link. The recording can be found at https://gfycat.com/AcceptableSelfassuredAnt

The Beta firmware is the issue as the PS4 has no problems connecting to two different computers using a network created with the Mobile Hotspot feature built in Windows 10.

Any suggestions in how to downgrade?

The only other issue I have encountered (using all firmware versions) is that the 5Ghz Wi-Fi will intermittently drop for a few seconds and re-connect. That happens with my Sprint LG G6, but not with my roommate's T-Mobile iPhone 7+.  My Sprint HTC 10 struggles to hold on to 5Ghz a foot away from the router with direct line of sight.

Can the PS4 connect to the default settings of router?

I'm seeing the firmware upgrade failure. Work around is to use the emergency firmware update page, for now.

Region: USA
ISP: Comcast. I think the service is cable. Subscribed speed is 150Mbps down.
Modem: Arris SB6141; no idea what hardware revision my modem is (if there are any revisions).

SSIDs are/were different between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. Smart Connect is/was off. 2.4Ghz was set to mixed g and n, and 5Ghz was set to mixed n and ac. Channel width is/was set to auto, same for the Wi-Fi channel used.
The tests were ran with 2.4Ghz on Channel 11, or the router determined Channel 11 was the best option at the time. 5Ghz router was set to Channel 149.
WPA2 is the security settings used.

I set the 2.4Ghz Channel to 11 today to test that, and it still failed. The error code the PS4 provided is NW-31294-9; weak signal strength. Right after that failed test, my LG G6 showed the same 2.4Ghz network had a signal strength of -36dBm.

My apartment complex is wired for Comcast (but not required), so there are numerous other residents that have a Comcast-provided router with networks for their own use and broadcasting a network for their free public Wi-Fi network. Acrylic Wi-Fi Home is picking up almost 40 different Wi-Fi networks on 2.4Ghz, and 20 networks on 5Ghz. Most 2.4Ghz networks are on Channel 1, with Channel 6 and 9 having around 8 networks a piece. 5Ghz is evenly split between Channels 36 and 149 in 4-channel MIMO.

Can the PS4 connect to the default settings of router?

I'm seeing the firmware upgrade failure. Work around is to use the emergency firmware update page, for now.

The PS4 was not able to connect to the router using the default settings created after a reset on the Beta firmware.

Last item, was the PS able to connect via LAN wired connection?
Something to try for a quick test, can you set the wifi for OPEN security and see if the PS connects? Set for WPA2 after testing.

After this, go back to prior working FW version and let us know how the PS does....

I'm currently trying to connect different devices to see the issue but have not replicated your experience with the beta firmware.

If you can, please try to test the same 2.4ghz channel on both firmware, if possible. Before you downgrade try channel 3 as well.

I set 2.4Ghz to Channel 3 and the PS4 was not able to connect.

The PS4 does have up to date software before this test was performed.

When I set the 2.4Ghz network security to OPEN, the PS4 did connect.

I'll be using the Emergency Recovery Mode to flash back to 1.01B04 since having an un-secured network and a 1TB data cap don't go together...

Edit: Successfully flashed 1.01B04. Previous settings were not reverted, and the PS4 connected with WPA2 security.

Yea, did the emergency mode revert thing to 1.01, all the same story as OP.  Works fine now, but obviously bein vulnerable doesnt make me super happy.

I recommend you phone contact D-Link support or try chat as well and let them know about this. Being vulnerable doesn't mean someone is currently trying to hack your router. Also the KRACK vulnerability is for clients and wireless bridges, not effecting AP and routers working in AP mode. However will eventually need to be fixed so you can be safe. I presume once D-Links has a review of this, they will post a fix. Again this was a Beta release so it just needs to be reviewed and try another build.

Let us know if they say anything. I'll pass this on to D-Link for review as well.

I upgraded to v1.10B05 without notifying my roommate to see if he encountered any issues. He asked me if I did anything with the router because his PS4 wouldn't connect anymore. I also noticed after upgrading that my Roku 3600R was no longer able to "see" the 5Ghz Wi-Fi network it used to be connected to. Neither in automatic scanning nor typing in the SSID like it was a hidden network would "see" it. No other settings were changed after upgrading to v1.10B05.

The link above says to follow the Emergency Mode to flash a lower firmware image and I tried that. Each flash attempt failed with Firefox and Internet Explorer erroring out saying that the connection timed out. I tried using v1.01B04 and v1.02B01 but neither would flash. I unplugged the router for a few minutes and tried again while holding the reset button for roughly 30 seconds during each step and tried v1.01B04 again. It appeared to flash but made zero progress over 10 minutes as the screen still showed the revolving circle and unplugged it for a few minutes. I tried flashing again but the router did nothing but flash the Power LED. I couldn't find the router running
Code: [Select]
ipconfig in PowerShell, and trying to access the Emergency Mode did nothing as well. All signs point to it being bricked and I'll be getting in touch with support for an RMA.

If this failed:
Emergency Recovery Mode (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.msg163599#msg163599)

I would make contact with D-Link support and ask for an RMA. Sorry you have been having problems.

Finally got the time to contact D-Link to get my bricked router RMA'd and stop using the $20 Netgear router my parents had lying around. After an hour on the phone I got one approved and received the replacement today. The replacement router ships with v1.10B05. Thinking things could be different with a factory-flashed model, I tried connecting my roommates PS4. It still does not connect and the PS4 shows a "signal too weak" error. My LG G6 shows excellent reception at the same spot so it cannot be distance affecting performance.

Recovery Mode does not work. v1.01B04 errors out from a lost connection immediately after clicking upload with Firefox and IE. I even tried v104B05 and has the same result. Trying to flash v1.01B04 in the router's web portal fails.

v1.02B01 BETA broke connection with the PS4, and v1.10B05 broke Recovery mode with its encryption. Unless you guys can find another way to get back to v1.01B04, I'll be contacting Amazon and see if they'll take it back since D-Link will not let you swap to a different router for warranty purposes.

Can you get v1.02 loaded via Recovery mode? If so, after getting that version back on, try downgrading to v1.01 either using the UI or Recover mode with IE11 or FF.

Any chance you have a wireless media bridge on hand?

I'll have support review this, maybe they can get you a pre-loaded v1.01 router as an RMA. This needs to be looked at by D-Link.

Are you upgrading with a wireless connection? If you are don't. Use Ethernet.

Make sure the PS4 has the latest updates (5.55).

Use internet explorer and disable any add-ons like adblock. The emergency firmware upgrade should work since it bypasses the encryption put on the firmware on 1.02 and above. I will have a tech test to verify.

Are you getting to the emergency firmware page or just the standard GUI screens?

Just to make sure the steps you are doing are correct: (note the 30/30/30 thing doesn't work with dlink routers)

Press the power button on the router to turn off. Hold down the reset button with a paperclip and press the power button to turn on. Wait about 10 seconds and release. The power LED will blink red.

You need to statically assign your computer 192.168.0.2 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Don't worry about dns or gateway addresses. Use Ethernet and plug into a LAN port. Open Internet Explorer and enter http://192.168.0.1. The D-Link Recovery page will appear. If you are asked for a login or the wizard appears, it didn't work.

Browse to the bin file (v1.01) and click upload. During the upload process your browser may time out. Wait until the router LEDS are solid green (except the globe icon may be orange depending on your ISP). Close your browser and reopen it. Go to http://192.168.0.1 and hopefully the login will appear. To see the firmware version enter http://192.168.0.1/version.txt

Let me know if this works or what happens during the process. I can forward to customer service and see what they can do.

Everything was done via ethernet and the PS4 did have 5.55 installed at the time of my previous post.

I used stock IE to connect to the router to get to the Emergency Mode page and tried flashing v1.02 as FurryNutz said. v1.02 failed instantly. I noticed you said to press the power button in your reply, and not pull the power cord like how the previously linked Emergency Recovery Mode instructs you to do. I pulled the plug when trying to flash v1.02. I tried flashing again in Emergency Mode, but left the power cord in and pressed the power button before following the steps provided. Pressing the power button, and not pulling it, allowed me to successfully flash v1.01 since the PS4 would not connect with v1.02 installed.

Firmware 1.11B02 just came out. It is supposed to fix connectivity issues with Xbone and PS4.

You may need to install the first file in the 1.10 package (adds encryption) and then 1.11.

Also be sure to upgrade to v1.11 FW or later as it was confirmed that this FW version fixes issues of game consoles connecting to this router.

  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • For routers with Smart Connect Technology (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=62072.0) , try disabling this feature and test. Under Wireless.
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channels) to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard), so you might want to try TPIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_Key_Integrity_Protocol) only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0) to find out. How many?
