I was thinking of upgrading my DIR-855 to the DIR-857 for a couple of features.  I haven't opened the 857 as of yet because of the massive amount of issues I have seen in this forum.  Those who have purchased this router and have been using it.  Should I open it and give it a try or take it back and get a refund?

I've been enjoying my 857 since day one. Most of the issues have been corrected as far as anything related to FW. Most other issues have been user configurations and external environment. I seem to recall you had some environment issues in your area? Were able to correct this or figure it out? If your looking for 5Ghz, this is a great router for it.

Ever since the 855 got the EU 1.23 Beta 6, I have been solid with the PowerLink (I think that's what it's called) acting as an access point that is wired to the DIR-855.  I had stability issues with the router with almost every NA firmware and used the NA recovery firmware to flash to the EU.  The DIR-855 is only broadcashing 5GHz for streaming while the AP picks up 2.4GHz for just about everything else.  USB3.0 on the DIR-857, it's black, and no antennas was why I picked it up.  It's still sealed in the box but I am tempted to give it a try.

Well the 857 is a bit similar to the 855 however the wireless connection speeds are faster on the 857 along with the CPU. If you don't have any devices that can take advantage of the 450Mb wireless connections, you may want to re-think. If you don't have any devices that can take advantage of the 450Mb wireless and you'd like to use the 450Mb connections, upgrade those devices to a DAP-1533 for those desktops or devices that have a LAN connection. For Laptops, I would check to see if there are any wireless adapter cards that are specifically built in to the LT that can be updated to the 450Mb connection. I think Intel makes one or 2 cards.

I doubt my N based Acer 8935G will do 450 over wireless but it is an Intel card and one that works fairly well with the right driver.  I do plan on buying a new laptop soon due to the 18.4 inch notebook display not being the most travel friendly.  I will definitely make sure to check the specs of the wireless cards before buying.  With a Wii U on pre-order and that having N.  I hope the DIR-857 can sort of future proof myself for the next couple of years outside of the reasons already stated.  With more and more devices being wireless friendly on N, my network is going to get more congested.

I've got it up and running.  The temperature of the unit concerns me a little.  It gets quite warm, even with the 2.4GHz WiFi turned off.  It came with 1.02 already in it.  I can't reliabily access the configuration page and when I do, it times out after a couple of minutes when I'm trying to finish setting it up.  The D-Link widget for monitoring it does not like this device at all.  It keeps telling me the IP Address is invalid when I know it's not.  I did change the routers IP Address.  Is there some sort of issue from doing this?

How are you accessing the routers UI? Wired or wireless?
How far away is the router from your PC your using?
See if you can change the IP address the widget is looking for with in the widget.

The router does get warm due to faster CPUs. Best to keep it in a well ventilated area or room.

It's using the exact same cable as I used for the DIR-855.  It's about 4 feet long and isn't around anything else.  I have resolved the configuration access issue it seems   The widget seems to be the problem.  I'm not sure what D-Link has done to arse this but it constantly returns the incorrect IP Address error even if it is correct.  I have tried multiple IP addresses for the router including the default.  Same thing.  As long as the widget is trying to access the router, which it doesn't do successfully.  It pretty much kills most chances of me trying to access the configuration through my wired desktop. 

Heat wise...  I'm wondering why D-Link has cheaped out on the internal heatsinks on this thing.  Looking at the review posted above.  The internal heatsinks are clearly not adequate for this device.  I do like the sleek look of this router in comparison to the DIR-855 but it does need more adequate cooling.  When the router gets very warm to the touch, the router becomes very sluggish!  I am tempted to enable the 2.4GHz radio to see if it causes the router to overheat.  I have an A1 that came with 1.02 right out of the box.

Be aware that the widget isn't developed any more and maybe incompatible now with these newer rotuers.

Any chance you can get a temp reading with a temp device when it gets warm? with and with out both radios going? I'm wondering if there is a heat issue here.

I used to have a laster digital thermometer but I gave that to my grandparents quite some time ago.  I think I'll pick up another soon for this purpose specifically.  With just one radio enabled, it gets very VERY warm.  I haven't seen any reboots as of yet but I am paying attention to it.  I will be away most of the Columbus Day weekend but I will try to get the thermometer as soon as I get back.  Do you happen to know what the thermal limits of the device are?  I know I read in a thread around here that one user had added a fan to theirs and hasn't had any issues with it afterwards.  Perhaps the simpleste way to resolve this is something si8milar to a laptop cooler that uses a OSB pass through to sit under the device or using actual copper for the heatsink instead of whatever they could find laying around in the company parking lot.  :p  

Edit:  Forgot to add that I have put the 5GHz radio through almost 2 hours of Netflix streaming in HD.  With nothing currently using the wireless, I'll see if I notice it get any cooler to the touch over the next half hour.

Edit 2:  Definitely cooler with nothing pushing data over the 5GHz.  I really don't want to heavily load both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz witout that non-contact thermometer in hand.  Ordering one from Amazon this evening so I should have it by the end of next week, evenw itht he holiday.

Don't know the limits however I'm sure they should handle temps around 90-100. However I don't know fore sure and don't know what testing was done at this level. They should work well at normal 60-90 though IMO at minimum.

I'll be trying to get some temps on mine. Please keep us posted on temp with and without radios going. I've notified D-Link about this.

 Mine has started dropping the wireless N when it gets hot - 110 degrees as measured with a thermal heat detector. Unit is out in the open - lots of air space around it and NO electronics anywhere close. This room is currently 68 degrees.
 If i cool the unit down - wireless is fine. I just reported this to tech support today.
 
 FYI _ this unit replaced a DIR-655 and sits in the same place that one did and it worked fine.
