Should I upgrade and if so what do you suggest?
« on: February 21, 2014, 08:31:40 AM »

Here's what I have: d-link dir-601, 1 desktop pc (dell, vista), 2 nexus tablets, 2 nextbook tablets, 1 ps3, 1 xbox360, 1 iphone4, 1 landline phone, 1 cordless phone and comcast high speed internet. We don't game much but we watch a lot of netflix/youtube. I'm not sure if I need to get an extender, a new router or any of the many other options available that I have limited knowledge of, lol.

I recommend getting in to a DIR-8 series router. The DIR-601 is a fairly basic router and may not handle some of the applications and streaming that you do. I have this router and it's not great for gaming.

What WiFi radio modes do you your devices support? N or AC? Any of them support the 5Ghz radio signal? Refer the Mfr for support and information on this.

I have the DIR-857, 827, 836L, 826L, 865L and 868L routers to name a few and all are very good:
http://www.dlink.com/us/en/home-solutions/connect/routers/-/media/Images/Products%20Connect/Cloud%20Router%20Comparison%20Charts/Cloud_Router_2000_chart.png

Some DIR 6 series routers may be worth looking at too if you don't have any devices that don't support 5Ghz radio. The 6 series routers only have 2.4Ghz radios. DIR-655, 645, 636L.

What ISP modem mfr and model do you have?

Could the radio signal be called something else? For the Nexus 2013 it says 802.11 a, b, g, n, n 5GHz and the Nexus 2012 802.11 a, b, g, n. This is the specs for the nextbooks my kids have, I don't see anywhere that says if it's n or ac... Yes. Thats an Ok modem. We've seen some issue with those modems:
Arris Cable Modems and External Routers

Some ISPs allow buy your own modem and installing it. This also avoids any ISP modem rental fees too. Motorola SB 6 series modems are great modems.

What ISP Speed UP and Down do you pay for? This can also effect streaming and gaming as well. Slower download speeds may not be sufficient to support streaming. I recommend 20Mb down min and 2Mb Uplink speeds if possible. I have 50Mb down and 3Mb Up here.

Wireless modes are just that, A, B, G, N and AC. If any of your devices supports 5Ghz, N and or AC modes on the 5Ghz radio, then you might look in to getting an AC supporting router:
DIR-816L, 850L, 855L, 860L, 865L, or 868L

I think I'm going to go with the 850L I'm pretty sure it's compatible with everything I have. I'm wondering though, because of the antenna not being external, will it still have good range? I don't have a large house but with the 601 I'm able to go pretty far outside and still get signal.  ???

I don't know about it's range..you could post in the 850L forum and see if other can give you a better idea. Placement is crucial as well of any WiFi router, central on the main floor is preferred. Concrete and metal objects can effect the 5Ghz radio mostly and some on 2.4Ghz.

If the 850L doesn't have range out side like the 601, you could use the 601 as a wired AP in addition to the 850L to help with some range if needed.
