Router & Extender Suggestions Needed
« on: December 29, 2014, 07:34:22 AM »

The router at my home died and I'm looking for some advice about how to best setup a new network.

My cable enters my home in a utility room in the basement where my Comcast modem is located. Previously I ran an ethernet cable from the modem to the first floor where it connected into a Lynksys EA4500. From there I ran another ethernet cable back to the utility room and cascaded the EA4500 with an older Lynksys router to service the basement.

I haven't had much success with Linksys so with another failed Linksys product, I'm looking to another manufacturer to setup my home network.

Upsatairs the following items connect to the wi-fi signal- 2 Laptops, iPad, Dell tablet, 3- iPhones, iPod, TV and Blueray player. My kids occasionally take their phones, computers, tablets etc to the 2nd floor so I need coverage to the second floor.
Downstairs I have an ethernet cable run from the cascaded router to a switch that services my Pioneer receiver and the Xbox. I have a treadmill, Blueray and WiiU that connect to the wi-fi signal from that router.

Any suggestions on routers and extenders along with the placement would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You could keep the same configuration by having the main host router on the 1st floor then running a cable back downstairs to say a DAP model AP running in AP mode using same SSID names and PWs. The only thing you'd need to do is to make sure that the DAP and main host routers are on different channels is all.

I particularly like the DIR-868L router. The 880L router is very good too.

There are some DAP model APs as well:

Thanks for the response and suggestions.

I think I'll get the DIR-868L and the DAP-1525 and wire up like you suggested.

Thanks again.

The router came a few days ago and I hooked it up without any issues. The AP came this afternoon and I set it up using WPS. I connected the AP to the main router with an Ethernet cable and I have wireless access in the basement. The only trouble I'm having is accessing the AP to set the channel. I set the main router to use channel 11 and 36 but I can't figure out how to access the web setup for the AP. I tried 192.168.0.50 but that didn't go anywhere. Can I setup guest access on the AP like I did the main router?

Thanks in advance.

Look for a different IP address on the router for the AP. Use this new IP address to access the DAP.
