WDS how to?
« on: March 26, 2010, 08:05:29 AM »

I recently purchased 2 DAP-2553 access points to construct a bridge.     I seem unable to get this working.
Here are my questions...

1.   Should both units be set to WDS mode, or does one need to be AP?
2.   Should the SSID be the same on both units?    I have read elsewhere that they should not.
3.   The WDS Information screen shows W-1 with a status of OFF....why..how to turn on?
4.   There needs to be a detailed 'cookbook' of exactly how to setup both sides of the bridge....is there one or am i missing it?

1. Both units need to be set to WDS
2. They can be different SSID's if you are using no encryption or WEP. If you use WPA you will need to use the SAME SSID. WPA-enterprise will not work
3. Status should change once you are successfully connected with WDS
4. Usually any WDS walkthrough should help out. The important thing is to ensure the MAC addresses are swapped, the channel is the same and all other settings the same. I usually configure both AP's in the same room to make sure they work before installing them in the field. Saves you from running back and forth all day long checking settings.

Thanks a lot.

That information is missing from the User Manual and that's why I saw so many posts in the internet about issues with figuring out the right combination of settings. Most of the people claim that WPA never worked for WDS. I was able to run WDS in open mode only. I didn't know that to be able to use WPA security SSID should be the same on all AP. Some of the WDS guides I was able find in the internet even suggest to use different SSIS for AP involved in WDS! I am going to change all SSID to the same name and check if it is going to help all APs to connect wirelessly.
