Replacement Unit - Formatting drives?? or not??
« on: July 03, 2008, 07:05:57 AM »

I've recently had a problem with my 323 and am awaiting an RMA unit.  My question is:  am I going to have any trouble putting the old hard drives into a new unit.  When I installed the drives in the 1st unit the first thing I had to do was format the drives.  Now I have two drives with all of my data on them that I do NOT want to format but need to put into the new unit.  FYI: they were in Raid1

What am I going to need to do when I put the drives in the new unit?

I might be wrong but if the replacement DNS323 has the same firmware as the old one, it should work without any issues.

I believe, the new unit's firmware will not know the drives are supposed to be in a RAID 1 configuration,
so you can't just drop the old drive into the new unit and get RAID1.

I think you would have to:
1) backup the data
2) setup the old drives as RAID1 (reformat) in the new unit
3) restore the data from backup.

What was the firmware version the drives were formatted with in the old unit?

Was running 1.05.  Not really concerned if they come back as Raid 1.  Just as long as the data is accessible.

Install one drive only - the unit should allow you to access the data on it, back it up, and then install the second drive and recreate your RAID array (if desired)

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Hi
If you get the new unit and it has the same 1.05 you are not going to need to format the drives.

Your going to be able to access your data just fine.

If the DNS-323 has a different firmware it is going to ask you to format your drives.

I hope this information helps you. :)

The RAID information is stored on the drives themselves when created you do not need to worry about the new unit know knowing they are in RAID1.
