Daily Connection Issue
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:47:30 AM »

Got my DIR-857 and have had it up an running since 6/30. I noticed that daily, there's an issue where it seems as if my internet connection has died - I can't access online on any of my devices. However, I'm not only still able to access the router, but the status shows I'm still connected. Additionally, I can perform ping tests through the dlink admin UI to various sites such as google or amazon, and the results come back normal.

This lasts about 5 minutes at most, and sometimes only affects a single machine - one won't work, but everything else (phone, Xbox, iPad, etc) will. I took a look at the logs and the only thing that seems to come up during the time I experience the issue is the following: UDHCPD sending OFFER of 192.168.0.106.

I'm using pretty much all defaults with the exception of wireless + security, open ports for online gaming, QoS prioritization, and DMZ host for gaming. Any ideas?

Link>Welcome!

Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

Review Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL. DMZ is not recommended for gaming.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

-I disabled DMZ host as requested.

-I'm using the latest firmware, version 1.01.

-ISP: Time Warner Cable
-ISP Modem: Stand alone
-ISP Modem Model: Arris TM502A

-I've added my IPs to the DHCP reserved list, but I'm manually assigning my devices IPs for port forwarding.
-There's unfortunately no Endpoint Independent option on this router's firewall page.
-uPnP has been enabled, but I enabled Multi-cast Streaming as well.
-I've tried this all on a freshly provisioned machine with no anti-virus and have no other router's in the house.

Overall I'm still seeing the issue unfortunately, even on my wired PCs. I previously ran a DGL-4500 and had 0 issues with it aside from poor wi-fi range, hence the upgrade to the DIR-857 (wireless signal on the 857 is absolutely great, btw!). I do have a cordless dect 6.0 phone in the house, but don't suspect that's the issue as the affected devices in question are wired.

Also, I am specifying my DNS values in Setup/Internet/Manual, but this was never a problem with my DGL-4500. The only thing I've noticed between the two is the 857 no longer allows me to specify my ISP's hostname like the 4500 did. Any ideas?

I am TWC customer and have been using the Cisco standalone modem. I too have manual IP addressing to wired and wireless clients. I tried the DHCP reserved list but it had issues from wireless lagginess. This is what I did.
1) Turn OFF DHCP, since it sounds like your manually assigning IP addresses.
2) Uncheck your port forwarding.
3) Keep your DNS settings since I assume they are correct ( remember them for later)
4) Save your new settings.
5) Reboot.
6) GOTO your NEW machine, using Win 7, Network and sharing>change adapter settings>rt click Lan connections>Properties>highlight TCP/IPV4>select properties> select IP address and DNS settings and fill in the blanks.
IP address: address of THAT machine
       Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (usually)
Default Gateway: should be the IP address of the DIR-857
Primary & Secondary DNS aquired from the Dlink router.
Save your settings in windows and this should do it. : )

Once you have verified that machine is able to access the internet and you have run speed tests and so forth, do the rest on your wired network, then move ontu your wireless clients.

I would also check into your ISP services and signal. We have see many issues with Arris modems. I presume you have phone service with your ISP using this modem? Possible if you don't, I highly recommend getting a Motorola SB 6121 or 6141 cable modem.

Also have the ISP check the signal levels going in to the modem. Use of any T.V. line splitters can effect signal and degrade it going to the modem. If splitters are needed, use only ONE good quality one.

You should try reserving ALL devices in the DHCP reservation ON the router, and set up port forwarding or QoS if your gaming on XBL. Many people use this and it works well.

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestion, Lexist2112, but I still saw no difference when manually specifying IPs. I decided to do some comparisons via speedtests as you suggested, except I did them between the DIR-857 and my DGL-4500. Interestingly, the DGL-4500 was much faster in every test, averaging a ping of 12ms and download of 30Mbps. The DIR-857 averaged a ping of 34ms and download of 18Mbps. Uploads speed was identical on both routers. The only thing that really stood our in terms of speed was the DIR-857's wireless, being quite fast and the range was magnificent.

I Arris modem is indeed for cable and telephone, but TWC did the entire installation and there's no splitter - the modem has it's own dedicated cable/line. Checked with TWC and the signal is good with no sign of issues. I've reserved all my used devices in the DHCP reservation, but I'm still stuck having to either reboot or release/renew the router on a daily basis. QoS is set up for each machine, but that made no difference in terms of the issue.

At this point, I'm back to using my DGL-4500 due to complaints from everyone getting knocked offline daily. I'm undecided on if I want to return the unit for a new one, or for a refund. I got it free using amazon points, so I'll likely give it one more try before I go with another brand or model.

I would presume there is a possible issue between the router and the ISP modem. I have seen many issues with Arris modems and personally, don't care for them. I try my best to help people with these modems however sometimes they just don't work well with external router. I bet if you took the 857 to a buddies house or neighbor and tested the 857 on a different modem, I presume the problem may not present it self there. If it does then you definitely know there is a problem with the router.

Whats the cable like between the modem and router? Swap cables by chance? CAT6 is recommended.

One test you could try if you have sometime. Hook up the 4500 as before the modem. Then connect the 857 to the 4500. Change the 857s router IP address from .0.1 to 1.1 for this test. Input the IP address the 857 gets on the WAN side into the DMZ on the 4500 so it will pass everything to the 857 with out any processing and prevent double NAT'g. Turn off WiFi temporarily on the 4500. If you can get this going, I wonder if the problem still persists?
