My dir-655 rev b1 drops every 3 hours
« on: September 06, 2014, 01:08:24 AM »

As the topic says, I have huge problems with my dir-655 rev b1. It drops my internet connection for 5-8 minutes every 2-3 hours. Every day, for the last 3 weeks. I tried several methods - i have the latest firmware, i reset to factory default, i changed the internet connection type to always connected. Nothing solved my problem so far.

Please help me to solve this issue. Thank you.

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

I called my isp and they sent 2 guys. Checked the wires, changed my router position and now my connection drops for up to 2 minutes, but more often - like 90 minutes. They said the their modem either works or stops working at all. So their modem is good. They blamed all the trouble on my router, and i agree with them. The question remains : is it a hardware problem or a software problem on my dir 655 ?

Lets try this:
1. Download the v2.09 FW file from this location:
http://www.dlink.com/ro/ro/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router?revision=deu_revb#downloads
2. Disconnect the router from the ISP modem and all other devices accept for the one wired LAN PC.
3. Factory reset the router using IE or FF under the routers web page Tools/System. Disable all browser add-ons and 3rd party PC security SW.
4. Send the .bin FW file again using IE or FF.
5. Factory reset the router using IE or FF under the routers web page Tools/System.
6. Set up the router from scratch and set up the PPPoE connection under Setup/Internet/Manual/PPPoE. Ensure ALWAYS ON is selected.
7. Do the following:
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Or test 100Mb. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Power Off the router and ISP modem. Connect the router to the ISP modem. Power ON the ISP Modem and let it sync then power ON the router.

ok, i did everything exactly as stated. TWICE. same result - every 2 hours i get disconnected. but no more than one minute. why every 2 hours ? why not 3 hours, or 5 or 8 ? this is why i think there is a setup issue.

furrynutz: if you want we can meet on teamspeak and i will let you take a look at my router.

Interesting, happens on the hour every two hours? Would seem that something is happening with the router or the ISP service...

Do you have a friend, family member or neighbor you can take the router too and test it there to see if the problem follows? Would be a good test to see if it's a problem with the router or your environment.

This happening every two hours on the hour is not a random thing.  ??? I'm confident that if you reloaded the FW load clean and set it up from scratch and it's still happening, there is something else going on.

Be sure to check cabling as well...swap cables. CAT6 is recommended between ISP modem, router and Wired devices...
