DSL-320B is connected but no Access to internet
« on: November 08, 2012, 12:36:34 PM »

Hello,

I have a DSL-320B ADSL modem that I have connected with Telefonica (Movistar) ADSL in Spain. I have a fixed IP with my internet service provider (ISP) and everything seems correct on the modem side (Status Up and OK). The DHCP is off by default and does react when I try to activate it, I guess it is because it is a modem and not a router.. but here is my problem...

What settings do I put on the computer connected to the modem?
I cannot access internet at all from my computer. I have tried this.
The modem local ip is 192.168.1.1

computer ip 192.168.1.5
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: what shall I put here, the modem IP , or the ISP gateway?
DNS: my ISP's DNS servers

What am I doing wrong??

I cannot get internet access on my computer even though when I login to the modem (192.168.1.1 admin/admin) the modem says "internet online".. Thanks

The 320B is just that, A MODEM only. It does not have any DCHP services that hand out IP addresses to devices that connect to the back. If this is the only device being connected to the modem, the modem should pass along the static ISP IP address it's getting from the ISP. You may need to input the DSL account information into Windows networking or connection settings to tell Windows that this pc is directly connected to a modem that is handing off DSL account information and Windows has to authenticate thru the Modem to gain access to the Internet.

Or, you might get a dedicated external router, which is preferred, then this will handle the DSL account connection to the modem and the router will then give you DHCP IP addressing services. Then all you need to do is set up Windows networking to Auto Obtain IP addresses from the host router.

So if you choose in connecting a router, it would look like this:
DSL-320B>DIR Series Router<>Wired PCs and or wireless devices can connect to the router.

Depending on what your wireless needs are, if any, I recommend checking out one of the following DIR series routers to use in conjunction with the dsl modem:
2.4Ghz only wireless
DIR-645, DIR-655.

If you need or want any both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wireless:
DIR-857, DIR-827, DIR-835 or DIR-825

Not sure what models would be available in your region. You should call D-Link and talk to a sale rep.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for reply. I already have a wireless router that I am trying to connect to the modem. But I'm not getting it to connect there either, therefor I was trying to connect the modem directly to my Mac.

But it is good to know that the modem just passes on the information from the ISP. I will do more troubleshooting in the morning (friday).

How does it interfere if my router connected to the modem has an IP-series of 192.168.2.X and the modem has its local address at 192.168.1.1, does it matter?

Thanks, df

Ok, so I spoke to d-link support in Spain and they asked me to upgrade the firmware from PB_1.01 to this one

ftp://ftp.dlink.it/Products/DSL/DSL-320B/Firmware/EU_DSL-320B_1.21_04162009.zip

I run the firmware update and select the file "EU_DSL-320B_1.21_04162009_CFE" but after the firmware upgrade it still remains on PB_1.01 !?!?!?

Thanks

I spoke again to a guy in the d-link support here in spain, he told me that I should be able to activate the DHCP settings on the modem and that it would be the problem. I can click the little box, but I am unable to click the "apply settings", nothing happens. I have tried safari, chrome, firefox,IE all the same in all browsers..Also tried on a PC.

What is the problem? Thanks

I would do the following, I presume you'll still need to have the PC or Mac networking still set up so you can access the modems web page using static IP address on the PC or Mac:
1. Ensure you are wired to the back of the modem, do a factory reset.
2. Log into the web page again after the factory reset and re-send the FW update file. It should take and be applied. Ensure you have unpacked the file to your desktop. I would use a PC to send the file.
3. Do one more factory reset after the update was applied and the modem is back at the ready.

If the update fails to be applied and the version doesn't change, then you need to contact D-Link support and have them review this and it's possible they need to get you an RMA for this unit.

Thanks, I appreciate the help FurryNutz..
Ok, so this is how I managed to solve it in the end after like 3 days of troubleshooting.

1. Find your oldest PC in the garage (My case WinXP)
2. Boot it up
2. Log in to router using  the oldest bloody version of Internet Explorer you can find. (ie 7)
3. Click "activate DHCP"
4. Click apply settings
5. Reboot Modem
6. Set your local machine to connect to modem via DHCP
7. Go on with your everyday life

FYI, before this I tried Chrome, Safari, Firefox, IE, but all pretty modern versions and none would accept to change the settings like the old IE on Windows XP. I guess that is what you get for trying to do modern stuff with a modem from 2007 :)

I am a happy camper now anyways, All the best

You can get older versions of FF. You might try that as well. Glad you found the fix.
Were you able to get the FW updated? I would get the FW updated using the old PC then maybe after that, newer browsers will work on it better for you.

Enjoy.
