Okay, I have thought of this multiple times. The DGl 4500 has a gigabit lan port and a gigabit wan port. Which in terms mean its able to go up to 1Gbps, but if you have 4 lan ports can they all go up to 1Gbps? The answer is most likely no. So that means this router is only capable of doing 250Mbs on each gigabit lan port. 1Gb divided by 4 lan ports is 250. Anyway this is a theory I have, care to tell me what you guys think? I will start a thread soon on this matter with more information that I have gathered.

I think this is a question that will get more and more complex as you think about it. Is your question can any one LAN connect to the router at 1000Mb? Yes. Can they all connect at 1000Mbps at the same time? Yes. Can LAN1 get 1000Mbps throughput to LAN2 if LAN 3 is transfering at 1000Mbps to LAN 4? No, and thats when it gets really complicated. That connection standard just means it transfers 1 billion bits per second on the CAT6(well,almost 1 billion anyway). That only relates roughly to how much data you can transfer. Here is a good thread already done on it.

Its funny too. You can track the slow break down of him as he looses his mind. I want to meet this guy.LOL

Yes I understand what you are telling me, but test has been done and the DGL 4500 does not even go above 250Mbps. So I have concluded that D link has not been advertising it properly. Yes it is a gigabit router because it supports 1000Base-T but do each individual lan port achieve a speed of 1Gbps? They do not, it has a hard time passing 240Mbps. But I understand D links method of advertising, I mean they are giving you a router that's capable of doing 1Gbps overall, but just not on each individual Lan ports.

Based on what? Where is the 250 number coming from? Connection rate? Because right now I have both the WAN and all 4 LAN connecting at 1000base. You said it has a hard time "passing". The connection rate has nothing to do with the amount of data transmitted through, or "passing" through the device. It has to do with the amount of bits that are transmited. Bits does not equal data.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_model

See the OSI diagram? Bit is layer 1, which means data isn't even calculated until layer 5.

Hard Harry you said you have them all connected at 1000base, same as me. But that does not mean your router will achieve that speed using a lan port. Have you tested it for your self? Do you know for a fact that you can push a 2Gb file at the speeds of 1Gbps? on the DGl 4500? If so you will transfer that file in 2 seconds (aside from hardware limitations such as hard drive) which the DGl 4500 can't do. max throughput that this router can do on one of the Lan ports is 250Mbps on half dupelx, full duplex would mean (125Mbps up and 125Mbps down which = 250Mbps) So if you have a router that supports a 100base and you have 4 Lan ports that you would have 25Mbps for each of those lan ports, now add full duplex to that and you get a 12.5Mbps up and a 12.5Mbps down. I hope you can prove me wrong, but as it stands now, I think I got it right. As I said I will do a thread so we can discuss this. FurryNutz what is your take on it?

Edits: Also I think discussion like these are very great for these forums, others might stumble upon this and learn something. Also I want to point out that I am still young so I don't expect myself to know everything.

Hard Harry you said you have them all connected at 1000base, same as me. But that does not mean your router will achieve that speed using a lan port.

Exactly! ::grin::

I think the confusion stems from the misconception that you have to pass some kind of test of passing 1000Mbps to be a 1000base connection. That just isn't the case. The standard has nothing to do with transfer rate. Think of it like a electric motor found in drill, and saying it can put out 5000RPM's. That doesn't mean if you connect that motor to a race car it will make the wheels spin 5000 rotations a min. The 1Gbps port on the DGL switches 1billion bits per second. It makes no promise of how much data it can transfer. Like the motor, it just takes the bits (electricity) and switches (spins) at a certain rate.

Also, 1000base is the standard for many other medium besides twisted pair. 1000base-lx are what some of the backbones are based of, and some of them can get speeds of 1-2GBps.

And yea, ask any questions you want. Don't mean to be bossy with my opinions. Its just this is some of the stuff I been having to wrap my brain around over the last couple of months. Its becoming less and less fun as my brain slowly starts to melt. :-)

So today I was looking around my router and decided to turn on logs to see what is happening on my network, I turned it on and BOOM 338 Log Entries entry's were made in under 10min. So what does this mean to me? IDK, I guess Its better to turn Logs off before it starts to slow down my router. Anyone else has logs turned on? How many logs does your reads?

Mine are on and I get a ton. I usually get full emailed logs every few days or so. My last long sent was Friday.

I usually just disable "Info" on my logs. When I do that, I get very few logs, but still get all the important ones.

Not a bad idea FurryNutz, How can I go about setting it up. I doubt I can, yahoo mail doesn't allow it unless I pay :(

I send my logs to my free aol account. Shouldn't see why Yahoo wouldn't do the same thing.

You have to put the Servers and stuff right? Yahoo only allows it if I pay 15 a year. I won't pay because there features don't excite me. I would change email carrier but I been with them since I was 12. Gotta love fan boys.

Gmail anyone? Free. Has POP and IMAP (and tons of other stuff). AOL still runs their pop servers? Wow.
