DIR-880l DHCP
« on: July 26, 2014, 09:17:00 PM »

Hi everyone,
I am hoping someone might have some insight into the issue I am having with my recently purchased DIR-880L. I'm having issues with getting any of my devices to connect to this router. No matter what method I used to connect, the device attempting to connect records itself as having an ip address of 169.xxx.xx.xxx (I am aware that this is a default ip address that devices assign themselves when the dhcp server fails to assign). At the moment I have the DHCP Server on the router enabled, its set to always broadcast and Enable DNS Relay is Enbled – I have tried switching these off, but it doesn't help. This issue is affecting all of my devices including laptop, pc, iphones and ipad. I can get round this issue by assign a static ip address to all of these devices but it gets a bit frustrating having to do this with each and every device that I try to connect. I've tried upgrading to firmware 1.01 but its made no difference. Interestingly I have found that if I create a guest network my devices can connect to that network and DHCP has no problems assigning IP addresses. Any thoughts anyone on what might be causing issues on my main network that is stopping DHCP from working? Thanks

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Thanks FurryNutz for the reply and welcome.
I have the DIR-880L (A1 ver) which is linked to a Billion 7800N (set in full bridge mode so as just to use the modem). The 880L has been upgraded to firmware 1.01. I have a DAP-1650 (set in access point mode), 2 PCS, 1 laptop, iphone, ipad and a couple of Dlink cameras (DCS-2332L) connected with a mixture of wifi and Ethernet.
Ok after a lot more testing and isolating of potential issues, turns out the culprit was that I had changed the default DHCP IP Address Range. Once I returned that back to the default figures (100 to 199) the auto allocation of IP Addresses started working again properly on both my wired and wireless devices. I no longer need to manual set a static IP on each device for it to connect. I've never had a problem increasing the DHCP IP range on a router before, so is this something particular to this model?
Thanks

What DCHP Pool addressing had you been using before?

What channels are the router and the DAP running on? Besure they are not running on the same channels while using AP mode...

I had tried to set the address range as 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. With regards to the wifi channels, on the 880L they have been set as 3 and 48 whilst on the DAP-1650 they have been set as 9 and 157. I do note that I was having the DHCP issues even without the DAP being connected to the system.

I'll have to ask, however I don't think using .2 thru .254 will be supported on this model router. Can you try .2 thru .100?

Recommended channel to manually set on 2.4Ghz are 1, 6, 11. 13 if your not in the NA region. Try 48 or 149 on 5Ghz. All other channels are over lapping channels used by the router and neighbors.

What region are you located in?

Just got my DIR-880L.

Having the same issue as Exchangy here :(

I believe the issue is to do with the DHCP Reservation slider (thats already been noted as a bug). Ive upgraded to the latest firmware and done multiple tests, seems adding 1 dhcp reservation is fine but anymore the DHCP throws a wobbly and stops working completely. I tried using the default DHCP scope and changing it to my preferred one but no difference :(

Do we know when this issue is likely to be sorted? I see in the patch notes for the latest firmware it states "Fix IP reserved issue" but that doesn't seem to be the case. No matter what I do the dhcp cuts out after reserving IP's

EDIT: So after some fiddling I decided to go back to my DIR655 until the issue is fixed, bit of a shame as the router is a great bit of kit let down by a silly bug (also noticed this happened with another one I had to take back)

  • What region are you located?
EU (UK) - Using firmware 1.01 2014-06-12 20:29:00 (DIR880A1_FW101b09_36ck)
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Both
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
Yes Factory reset about 10 times, reset -> firmware upgrade -> reset FW Update Process

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
DSL
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Sky SR102

The Reservation slider bar issue was fixed in v1.01. Doesn't seem like it is :( Unless im using the wrong firmware?

Are you using the default IP address pool or the .2 thr .254 configuration? Please try the default IP address pool of .100 thru .199 and reserve devcies and let us know what you find out. Tried both, default pool and the usual 192.168.1.1 odd

What browser are you using? Chrome

Its a DIR880L HW:A1 FW:1.01

Not had any issues with the DIR 655 with this setup, basically just unplugged the 655 and plugged this in and configured.

The issue seems to be with the DHCP server itself after you assign a few reserved IP's.

Ive managed to install wireshark and watch the network for DHCP requests and for the first 6 or so IP's i see a constant release, Discover, Offer, Request, ACK and both devices (wired and wireless) pick IP's up. I then changed the IP's to something constant (192.168.100.111 - 114) and reserved them while adding my phone into the action and the DHCP server cr**s out. Devices send out discover packets and the DHCP server ignores them completly, only way to get it back is to factory reset.

UPDATE1: Ok so went back to testing and factory reset and unplugged the modem from the router (so only local lan now) just to check if it was conflicting or something. Factory reset and could see the dhcp assigning IP's again (great!), so add about 4 devices (PC, Laptop, phone and TV), assign them reserved IP's and reboot the router (several times). I then start renewing the IP on the PC and laptop to watch the DHCP requests on wireshark... everything fine :)

So start adding all the extra devices (VM's, servers xbox etc) get to about 8 devices, still watching dhcp requests fly about and changing IP's to within the correct range 100 - 199 (just going up 1 every time to test). Suddenly constant DHCP Discover requests over and over :(

So in conclusion so far:
 - Nothing to do with the internet (configured for static IP on a different ip range just to have something there, also tried dhcp)
 - Seems to work fine without any dhcp reservation (haven't tried it for long as its not how I'm going to use it)
 - DHCP seems to work for 15minutes and then gives up :(

I remember having the same issue on a DIR-685 that I had to send back as well :(

Have submitted a support request to see what support say but may have to send it back and stick with the 655 till things are fixed.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Please detail us your device list. What are these Servers as well. You might retest and start from what the last device you added was to be sure and add that one first.

I'll pass this along to my local office here and see if they have any info. I'll have my buddy who has my 880L on loan to check on this for me as well.

Keep us posted.

Hi Furry,

Located in the UK, so region is EU.

I've raised a support ticket with Dlink who's escalated to 2nd line (not sure if that's any good or not?)

The servers are basically just VM's running on a HP Microserver (2 x Nas4Free and 1 x Win 7 box running media streamers etc).

Will wait to see what dlink support says and give them a call if I hear nothing by Friday, really don't want to send it back but could be a fault with the box. :(

Yes let us know how it goes. I would recommend phone contacting D-Link instead of via email. You'll get quicker response I believe.
