This is weird.

I had been using a D-Link DIR-655 in my home office, connected to a D-Link DIR-868L that was the main router for the house.  Every few weeks, the wifi would drop out on the office router.  A reboot would fix this. Since there is really only a printer on it wirelessly I would notice it only when I tried to print, which is a rare occurrence. Recently a Sonos speaker was added to the office, this also connects wirelessly.

At one point I replaced the DIR-655 with another DIR-655 that was a leftover device (I'm in the networking world so I have a lot of devices...) This one also suffered from the wireless failure but the wired never had a problem. I assumed it was a 655-specific issue.

When the wireless dropped out, the main router console would be inaccessible, despite the fact that the wired portions (which a desktop and NAS are connected to) still ran perfectly.

I purchased a new Synology main router and moved the DIR-868L into the office to solve this dropout problem once and for all. Then, this morning when I was accessing the Sonos from the family room I noticed the office speaker was offline.  I pinged the NAS and desktop (both wired) and everything was running fine.  I tried to access the router from the IP address.  Nothing, it just hung and timed out.  Rebooted it and everything is running again.

In the 2 years that the DIR-868L was running before it never lost wireless.  Why now is this happening? Clearly it is location-related, not hardware-related. Outside of the office are 2 central air units.

Any thoughts?

  • What region are you located?

IT would seem that since your 655s experienced wireless issues that the 868L seems to have problems in this location as well. This would point to a environment interference issue and or channel configuration problem as well.

  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.


Router Placement

3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

No phones near it. 
Computer with bluetooth KB/mouse near it.
Wireless devices are only a printer and a Sonos speaker
Wifi scanner shows minimal interference. I specifically set all 3 of my APs to not overlap, 1, 6 and 11 with each tuned to the best frequency to their area.

I will try to turn off those different options and see what happens.

What seems odd is that not only does the wifi go but the console (which I assume is running on a web server) is not accessible either. However the wired switch still runs fine. Objects connected via wired have no interruption but the wifi and the console are dead.

This may take a while to debug as it can take weeks before it happens.

BT kybd and mouse could be a source as they run on 2.4Ghz or near I believe. Some do. Might check this.
