Camera Keeps Disconnecting
« on: April 19, 2014, 05:15:32 PM »

I have a DCS-2132L and a DCS-2332L; the DCS-2132L keeps giving me the Camera Disconnected notification.... The DCS-2132L is closer than the DCS-2332L. The DCS-2332L has no problem staying connected.

Any Suggestions?

Disconnecting from LAN

Are the disconnect notification messages also showing in the camera log?  or are these notifications only coming from the mydlink™ service?

It is showing up in the log, and the live feed to my local duplex screen disappears.

Do you notice any other entries in the log that may indicate something is going on prior to the disconnection message?  Any way you can:

1. Post the section of the log that show the disconnection message?
2. Tell us what AP or Wireless Router is handling the connection
3. Are there any environmental factors that may affect the camera's wireless connectivity, ie. a large window, a large mirror, a fish tank, bathroom walls, is this an upstairs/downstairs type of setup?

Wireless disconnects are difficult to troubleshoot due to the amount of details that need to be collected to find out if it is the location or the actual product, with that said, any way you can swap the cameras and see if the DCS-2332L happens to enjoy the new location that the DCS-2132L seems to have problems at staying connected.

Let us know.

I have 2 DCS-2132L cameras.  I get similar behavior from both.  They just disconnect from Wifi for no apparent reason.  I was checking one of the cameras, with my PC.   I got out.  I immediately decided to go back in and it was dead.  I had the red "x" and there was no way (camera web page, mydlink.com, etc.) to access the camera.  In each instance I have to power-cycle.  I can wait days and the camera refuses to reconnect without it.

The particulars...
1) One camera is literally mounted just 15 feet away from my wireless router.
2) The only thing separating the two are two run-of-the-mill walls (drywall & 2x4s).
3) The firmware version of both cameras is 1.02.
4) I've tried both static IP and DHCP.
5) I have a Arris TG862G cable modem/router from Comcast/Xfinity.
6) This happens constantly, at least a couple times a day.
7) Like most modern families, I have NUMEROUS other Wifi devices that don't have a problem whatsoever, at least with re-connecting immediately.  These 2 cameras are the only problems.
7) Here's the section of the log for one event that happened in the middle of the night.

It seems to imply that my Comcast/Xfinity network just disappears.  Even so, why doesn't the camera ALWAYS attempt to reconnect?  Is that what these PERIODIC Triggers are attempting to do?

Will D-Link be issuing an update to the firmware, since this is the ONLY device that remains disconnected.

1. It looks like the disconnect information does not show up in the log; it disconnects from the my dlink app, my local DNS and my duplex monitor.
2. NetGear N600 802.11n Dual Band Gigabit Model: WNDR3700
3. My house is a split level so the Router is on the main floor and the camera in question is one floor below. There is only one wall between the camera and the router and it is a closet. The two camera are approximately the same distance from the router. I can't switch the camera's places because one is an indoor camera and one is an outdoor camera. The cameras are both within 30 ft of the router.

There were one interesting post on the D-Link Russia support website (link, russian language). In short, user bought the DCS-2230 and was very unhappy about constant disconnection of camera from his WiFi network. His camera could work for 15 minutes then might not to connect to router at all, then again camera could work almost all day (or again for 15 min). He decided to find a source of this issue and checked the temperature of all chips and found that wifi chip (WL-294 USB module by CC&C based on RTL8188CUS chip) is a WAY too hot than it should be. Maybe your camera have the same issue?
If you do not afraid to void your warranty, you can check the temperature and (if needed) replace the wifi module, all you need is just buy any RTL8188CUS-based usb wifi dongle (there's a lot of them on local and online stores, for example Upvel UA-210WN), and solder it instead of original one. Or maybe adding some heat removal system on the wifi chip could help (an aluminium bar or something like this).
Sorry for my bad English :)

P.S. The wifi module is on the top right corner of this foto, these 4 pins on it is modified usb connector.

Thanks for the information, I'm having another set of eyes take a look at the logs you posted and we are also running a few test on our own to see if we can duplicate what you are seeing.

I still have a few more questions:
1. Does your router have external antennas?
2. When you say "my local DNS"  does that means you are running your own DNS server in the local network?
3. Since the camera is in the floor below, can you try measuring the signal strength at the exact camera location? The camera would do it's best video/audio transmission at a 50 to 60% Wi-Fi signal. You can use software (Wi-Fi scanner) like inSSIDer 4 to get the measurements. There is also a mobile version for your Android tablet/phone. If the signal is below 40% it maybe the reason of the disconnections.

Sorry that we have more questions than answers at this time, but we trying to make sure we understand the setup. Thanks for sticking with us!

Update: The Problem camera disconnected for the whole day today... had to come home and reset the camera from scratch to get it to work.

1. No External Antennas
2. I mistakenly typed DNS, I meant to type DNR (DNR-202L)
3.
Signal Strength next to camera with problems...

New Problem with same camera....
When I select the feed from the disconnecting camera in my DNR and try to download a video clip ... it acts like it is processing the task, but no video clip is produced. (even if the footage shows up on the DNR).

Here's how I resolved the issue with my 2 D-Link DCS-2132L cameras routinely disconnecting and never reconnecting.

  • Had Comcast/Xfinity replace my Arris modem with a Technicolor TC8305C modem/wireless gateway.
  • Disabled IPv6 on my new modem.  (The Technicolor modem had IPv6 disabled by default.)
  • Selected channel 1 instead of allowing the modem to auto-select my channel.
  • Angled my modem.  It was facing East-West on my desk.  I now have it facing more Southeast-Northwest.  The back end of the modem is now pointing more towards the middle of my house.

At present, I've got pretty decent (29Mbps) download speed over my Wi-fi network.  The cameras, both of them, now NEVER disconnect and are working quite nicely.  It has been more than 24 hours now with no incidents.

I don't know which of the 4 steps (or combination of steps) above did it for me.  I would suspect it was a combination of the 1st three.

Issue Isolated: It is the signal strength from the WIFI.

I disconnected the camera from downstairs and brought it up stairs. I laid it directly next to the router for 48 hours and had not issues. I ordered a WIFI range extender, which will hopefully resolve the issue.

I did the same as you.  I purchased a Wi-fi range extender (Linksys).  It worked surprisingly well.  My camera located the farthest away from the router did much better, much fewer disconnects.  But, it still disconnected from time to time.  I was then presented with the dilemma of having to purchase 2 extenders, one for each camera.  That got to be a bit much for me.  Hence I ultimately resolved my problem as documented in my previous post.
