L2TP 30 character limitation
« on: January 28, 2019, 01:04:35 PM »

Good day, I just received a brand-new dir-815. Hw version A.
firmware 1.05. I wanted to use it to watch German TV. When configuring L2tp it turned out that the server address can only be 30 character long. So I am now stuck with a Hungarian server, as it's the only one in the portfolio of my vpn provider that has less than 30 character. Is there any work around? Thank s in advance. Lars

Most likely a limitation by the firmware.

I do not see a version 1.05 for this product. Please see what the exact version is. Log in to your router and then type 192.168.0.1/version.txt  (or the LAN IP address of your router)

I can't access version.txt this way. Is there any other way to look at it? Would older versions of the firmware not have this limitation?

Older FW would have this same limitation.

Can I change something in the firmware to allow for longer strings?

Unless you know how to decompile FW binaries, make changes your self, then re-compile the FW code and ensure it doesn't brick the router.
Would be much easier to find you newer DIR series router. Something more up to date and more secure.

Good evening again, thanks for your feedback so far. I actually found i have a DIR-816, not 815. I guess it does not make a difference as far as the previous guidance is concerned. I still have a question. What is the difference between DIR-816 and 816L? it seems there is plenty of firmware available for the L version, but almost none for the "non-L" version.
Thanks in advance.

regards

The L version implemented the mydlink services so you could use the mydlink lite app and use the portal at mydlink.com mainly for viewing statistics and client information. The L version was sold globally but the non-L version was only sold to middle east, parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Thanks. I bought this in middle east. Availability of routers with L2TP functionality is somewhat restricted here.
