Would this be a good modem?
« on: August 30, 2013, 03:48:38 PM »

TWC of course raised the modem rental fee again which is now higher than the price offset I was given from complaining about the fee, so I'm now looking for a modem.  This one seems to be the least expensive  DOCSIS 3.0 modem and has good reviews.  If anybody knows of any decent modems that cost less, please tell, otherwise I'll get this one.

Motorola SB 6 series modems are very good and highly recommended. I have this model, along with the 6120 and 6180. Good modems. Will be all you need.  ;)

Also I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

TWC did replace my coax from the modem to the pole with CATV hardline coax(lower dB loss than the RG-6 coax that was used previously) a year or two ago.  Unfortunately, I will have to add a splitter in the line as the ARRIS modem is still needed for VOIP.

Well use a good quality splitter if you must.

You might check to see if Motorola as a good Modem/Phone unit as well. They did have some phone modem combo's...Could replace the Arris with a single unit.

Unfortunately, there are no Modem/Phone units on TWC's approved modem list at all.

I found out the Arris purchased Motorola Home which includes their cable modem line.
