Wireless Printer Problems
« on: November 21, 2013, 04:11:22 PM »

Hello, I just purchased a new printer from Staples, it's a Canon MG5500.

I have my DIR-826L bridged with my ISP router/modem. My printer says it connects to the wireless when I do the WPS or even a standard setup, but none of my computers detect it. I've downloaded the drivers and even run a wired setup to do the wireless, and it still doesn't connect to the printer.

When I disconnected my router and re-enabled the ISP router it connected fine and all the computers pick it up.

Is there a setting which could be stopping me in all this?

When I check the wireless logs it's giving my printer a 0.0.0.0 IP. I tried assigning it an IP 192.168.0.130 but no joy either.

Thanks for any help!

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Did you ensure that your PCs printer driver settings setup for the newer IP address that the printer is setting from the router?

I recommend manually connecting the printer wired first to the router and get it set up with a reserved IP address ON the router.

I have a HP Laser Jet wired to my routers and when it comes time to printing, it works.

You might reset the printer or power off then back on after 30 seconds. Check the Setup/Networking menu for the new IP address there then reserve it.

Once thats done, either re-install the drivers on the PCs or make sure that the drivers are pointed correctly to the IP address you reserved for the router.

Sorry I forgot to say my firmware is 1.04 and hardware version A1. I think I chose to obtain IP automatically on the printer settings, then when it couldn't connect to the router, it gave me another option to do it manually so I matched the IP assigned it on the reserved IP page but still nothing.

I tried plugging the printer directly into the usb on the router as well but don't know if that is used for that purpose or not, that didn't work either anyway.

Should I screenshot the sections I do as I go along?

Does the printer have a wired LAN cable connection by chance or only USB?

USB printer connections is not supported on this router. Only USB HDD and Flash drives are.

Lets try this. Temporarily disable WiFi security on the router. Connect the printers WiFi to the SSID name that you gave on the routers WiFi section. Does the printer connect and get a IP address?

Thanks again Furry,

There is no wired LAN cable on the new printer.

I just disabled all wifi security on the router so it was open. The printer again says it connects but no IP address is given it's 0.0.0.0 when I check the wireless section

Every tablet/computer/phone seems to get on fine but not the printer. A bit confused still  ;D

It works ok with the ISP router but I hate using that because the D-Link is far superior for range and copying files

Ok lets try this, set the router to single mode G, open security. Change to 20Mhz only. Turn OFF HT20/40 Co-Exhistence under Advanced/Adv Wireless. Also turn OFF Short GI. Reboot router and then try to connect printer.

I'm wondering if the printers WiFi could be an issue. If other devices are connecting and the printer isn't, possible problem there.

  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

How close is the ISP modem from the 826L and the printer?

My other router is a Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 supplied by Rogers ISP. It's a router/modem combo. I disable the router function when I connect my dlink to it. The printer is about 5 feet away from the router

I just went into advanced wireless but do not see the option Short GI or how to change the MHZ to 20 on wireless section. Am i doing something wrong?

I've not tried the printer yet incase I have missed a setting

I actually just tried connecting out of curiousity and it has assigned an IP! first time yet. I have only changed the mode I think and disabled the co-exhistence to disable (unless it was already I forget now)

Ok, now try changing the mode to Mixed G and N only. Save settings and reboot the router. Check the printers IP address after the reboot and see...

Ya I forgot, they removed Short GI on this model. Don't worry about it.

You need to find out what wireless modes the printer supports. I presume G and may not support N. Also what security modes as well, WPA, WPA2 and cypher types, TPIK or does it support AES as well?

Bad news after I rebooted the printer it gave me the 0.0.0.0 IP again on the router, and it was in G mode unsecure.

I changed SSID and it said connecting again, just the same 0.0.0.0. It did work briefly but back to how it was again.

Could my router be on it's last legs? I think I've had it almost a year. The online manual is very unhelpful for Canon, I can't find it at the moment but I'm 99% sure it supports WPA/WPA2 and AES

I doubt it...I would think there is a problem with the printers WiFi. Your other devices connect with the router right?

Yep, I have two playbooks, a mac, desktop and 3 phones that connect all fine, it's just the printer being a baddy!

My printer is new and Staples said I can return it within 7 days if I'm unsatisfied. I might do it tomorrow if I'm out and about and ask for an exchange. Hopefully it solves the problem and not a compatibility issue or something.

Thanks for your help Furry really appreciate it, you're a credit to the forum

I will let you know soon if I get anything accomplished!

Hello Furrynutz,

I decided to buy a different printer Canon MG7100. It has an ethernet port to it so it works absolutely fine! I like how it has this feature

When I first tired the wireless it connected fine and set an IP, but as soon as I turned it off and turned it on later it done the 0.0.0.0. After a reset and deciding to do a DHCP reservation for the printer beforehand it's kept the same IP even after a few shutdowns. So far so good! But it if does the 0.0.0.0 again I will just use the ethernet cable which is no big deal.

I may give my DIR-826L to my mother in law over easter time, is there any Dlink router you recommend that's better than the 826L? I do like the whacky design but never have much luck with the 5ghz signal

Thanks for all your help really appreciate it!!
