I'm having similar problems as OP except I don't have a modem and the DSL line runs straight from the phone jack to my router and another ethernet cable from the router to my PC.

Probably every 2-3 hours, the router freezes up and I get no wifi or internet on the PC directly connected to the router. I have to un power the router and then replug it back in for the connection to reset and start working again.

I contacted Dlink support they told me to reflash the firmware on my router, which I did, but it probably solves the problem for 1-2 days max and then starts occurring every few hours again.

What do you guys advise?

THere has to be a modem or some sort of device connecting you to the ISP.
What ISP service do you have?
Sure there isn't a ISP modem somewhere?

I have ATT DSL. When they came out to set it up a long time ago, they just had the line from the wall into my computer and then from my computer to the router. So unless my computer itself is the modem?

I'm still having problems with my Wifi being broadcasted, but it's just not connecting to the internet. My laptop (on Win7) that I use wifi on gets the yellow exclaimation ! on the signal strength icon and then I know that I have to get up and go unplug my router and replug to fix it. Today, it's done that for almost every 15 minutes. On my desktop (Vista), there's usually a computer and a globe icon when there's internet and it disconnects from the internet and shows the computer icon w/ the blank screen.

I'm browsing through the forums and pretty much trying every tip on here to see what's up with it. I've reset the router to factory settings and tried almost everything, but the same thing happens over and over.

Probably might head out and get some sort of modem to try it out and see if it makes any difference

If you have ATT DSL then there is a modem.
Need to find out if it's a stand alone modem or has a built in router as this can effect having another router on line.

Can try changing the 655 routers WiFi modes from Mixed to Single G or Mixed G and N if you have N supported devices. If this doesn't help I would see if the DSL modem can be reset and bridged if needed and see if that helps.

I am  joining the chorus of voices.  Have the same random yet regular disconnect issues (have not "analyzed" the periodicity yet).

My disconnect interval seems a bit longer than those who say it happens every 24 hours - it seems like I go 2-3 days before disconnecting and having to reset.  I have also noticed that when I go back into the management interface to reset, the wireless security has been "reset" to "None" so while "disconnected" my system is unsecure?   I set it at WPA2.

Now that I've read through the 8 pages, no one seems to have mentioned the Group Key Interval Update setting - this cannot be turned "off" on this router and a value MUST be put in.  My previous router I was able to turn this setting off and similar disconnects happened much less frequently.  Could this be part of the problem? I have set the GKIU to 36,000 seconds or so - almost the most it can be (the factory default I believe is 3600 seconds).  I am eager to go home and try some of the other suggestions -- esp. the DHCP reservation suggestions as I also have a number of devices connecting (3 computers (1 Windows; 2 Macs); 1 iPad2; 1 Vizio TV; 3 cell phones (1 iPhone; 1 Android; 1 Blackberry)) - which seems to be a common bond here.

(Also using:  Verizon DSL Modem; ASUS router set as a Repeater)

Try changing to single mode G and changing the channels. Your Asus repeater could be a factor regarding interference, need to make sure that and the 655 isn't on the same channel or near by.

Set up Reserved IP addresses on the 655 router for all of your devices including the Asus repeater.

Thanks - I "reserved" every device that was visible (note that the ASUS uses the DIR-655's "identity" to boost the signal - it does not have its own SSID)!

What do you think about the Group Key Update Interval causing issues?

Really shouldn't be causing a problem. Preferred security is WPA2 and AES, however some devices don't fully support AES so try TPIK only to test. We have seen some odd issues lately with iPhones, Droids and such. Test with Single mode G and no security to test, Turn off all devices accept for one and test. Then turn on WPA2 and TPIK and test. Graduate the devices. Let us know.
