Router resetting connections
« on: December 02, 2011, 07:37:16 PM »

Hello,

I would really appreciate some help with a connectivity issue I began having after I reset my DIR-615 to factory settings. I have confirmed with my ISP that the router is the likely problem. The two issues (which are probably related) are as follows:

- When browsing on the internet, opening a new page will often reset instead of load. The error screen that pops up says "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." If I refresh, the page will then load just fine.

- When playing an online MMORPG, Guild Wars, the chat server disconnects every few minutes (but not the game itself) and says "network login expired" and I have to log back into it.

Below are answers to questions I found that are commonly asked of someone introducing a new issue. Hopefully they will be helpful! Thank you very much in advance.  ;D

What HW version is your router? C1
What FW version is currently loaded? 3.13NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Cable through Comcast
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone (I think)
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Motorola SURFboard SB5101U DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem

What wireless modes are you using? Mixed n, g, and b
Try single mode G or mixed G and N? I'm not sure if I should try this--please let me know =)
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? WPA only
What wireless devices do you have connected? Usually just one laptop, sometimes two, and occasionally my Xbox 360.
Any cordless house phones? No
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Yes, my neighbors all have secured wireless networks.

Have your tried going hardwired to the router and seeing if the problem continues? Or hardwired to modem?

Hi Harry! I've plugged in directly to both the modem and the router and have not experienced the problems outlined above. It seems to be a wireless issue only.

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

I adjusted to mixed G and N and duplicated the WPA settings you listed out. I haven't gotten the page loading error since switching to those settings, but the game chat server disconnections are still there. I spoke with the game's tech support staff and they had me run a test for them and told me to contact my router manufacturer to solve the problem.  ::)

Can you think of any other router settings that could cause this? Thank you for helping me!

What is this game chat server that you are talking about? PSN or XBL or a PC game?
THere maybe special ports that you need to use. However if you are chatting voice and gaming over the WiFi, might be best to try it wired connected to the router and see if you get the same problems. If so, there could be some additional configuration for this game chat server thats needed.

The chat server is for a PC game called Guild Wars. It is text only. I already have the appropriate ports open for that game--they recommend TCP 80 and 6112. Beyond forwarding those ports, I can't adjust any settings for the in-game chat feature. I don't seem to have trouble using other voice chat programs though.

I got the connection reset error loading a page earlier so it doesn't seem to be exclusive to the game like it seemed earlier. I don't understand how resetting to factory default could cause this problem. The router did an auto channel scan and found channel 11 to be the best one to use. Is it possible a different channel would solve the problem? I'm liking 11 though since it's giving me a wireless signal strength of 100%.

Edit: I ran inSSIDer 2.0 and found that my router is using channels "8 + 12." I imagine this would increase interference since it's spanning across several channels. I don't understand router stuff hardly at all, but I'm guessing the one "N" connection to my router is pushing for 40MHz instead of 20. Should I change the setting from Auto 20/40MHz to 20? There are 8 other wireless networks in the area and they use a wide range of channels.

It sound like this could be some wireless interference. I would manually set the channel to something that is not being used. Try single mode G or N to test. You can also set 20 or 40Mhz and test as well. It would be a good test to wire the PC to the router and see if you see the same thing. I kind of doubt it. Keep us posted.

Well, unfortunately I'm still having the same problem. The wireless signal drops occasionally, but not nearly as often as the Guild Wars chat server disconnections (those happen every few minutes). I've tried limiting the connection to 20MHz and putting it just on 'g' mode. I've also changed channels a couple times but nothing seems to help. I'm not sure what else to try! Anyone have any other ideas of what might fix this?  ???

Happen with single mode N 20Mhz only as well?

Does InSSIDer show any other WiFi routers near by?
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
